Hi Jay,

I'm not familiar with that modem. I googled it, but, wasn't able to find much information about it. I did find a press release that referenced the manufacturer, but that must be an older model as the manufacturer web site didn't list that model. And the manufacturer web site had very little in the way of technical details available about any of their products. So it's hard to know what protocols they support.

The SMS related commands are part of ETSI GSM 07.05 and/or 3GPP TS 27.005. So generally it's a good sign if you see a mention of those protocols being supported by the modem.

To determine whether or not this particular modem will work, I'd be curious what the error message is that you get when you try to add it to NowSMS.

Regarding other USB modems ... I know of customers using modems from Falcom, Multitech and iTegno. The Sierra Wireless 881 works as well, but it's tricky to configure because the Sierra Wireless installer doesn't install a Windows modem driver for the AT command port for SMS (details toward the end of this thread: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/24431.html ... you need to check Windows device number to determine the COM port number to use for the Sierra Wireless modem).

Hi Des,

Thanks for your immediate feedback.
From Device Manager, I got the COM port for the Application Interface. In my case it is COM8.
In order to see the COM8 under Nowsms(Under Add Modem dropdown), I have exited the GlobalTrotter Connect software before starting Nowsms.
Once configured the Modem, I have successfully tested both MO and MT.

FYI..While reading the user manual for Thomson TG230, I have found the support URL pointing to www.option.com.
And I understood that TG230 is the same as iCON225.

Hi Jay,

Good catch. I should write up some common modem troubleshooting tips.

Often the software that gets installed with a modem takes control of it so that it is not available for other applications. So, it may be necessary to exit or otherwise disable this software so that it is not active when NowSMS is trying to run.

Note that configuring NowSMS to talk directly to the COM port will work for sending/receiving SMS, but if you want to be able to send/receive MMS, then NowSMS needs to be configured to use a Windows Modem driver instead of a direct COM port reference. Usually there is a modem driver already installed by the modem software that can be selected for this purpose. (The aforementioned Sierra Wireless modem is an exception. It has two modem drivers installed by its installation software, but neither of these modem ports have SMS support! There is a separate port that you need to identify through the device manager.) If you do have a modem that does not have a driver installed for its COM port, you can manually add one ... we generally recommend using the "Standard 33600 bps Modem" driver. (Don't pick a higher speed driver because the higher speed drivers try to enable protocols that are landline specific and can confuse a GSM modem. Even though the driver says 33600 bps, it can operate at higher speeds if available on your network ... although these higher speeds are only really available issue for sending/receiving MMS, not for SMS.)
