Hi,

I have a Multitech Wireless modem GPRS model MTCBA and need to know how many sms can be processed by minute. And how much time will take to process 1,000 SMS messages?

I hope you can reply, thanks in advance

Hi Edwin,

It depends.

Mostly it depends on whether or not your mobile operator supports "SMS over GPRS". This is not an easy question to answer as our experience has been that whether or not this is supported is often a regional issue for many operators ... where they may support it in one region of a country, but not in another.

Next, it depends on the signal strength of your connection to the mobile operator.

And it depends on the performance of your mobile operator's system in accepting SMS messages for sending.

In near optimal circumstances, with SMS over GPRS supported, you can achieve close to 1 message per second ... taking between 17 and 20 minutes for 1000 messages.

On a slower operator network, still with SMS over GPRS supported, you would see about 1 message every 2 seconds. That would take a little over 30 minutes for 1000 messages.

Without SMS over GPRS support, you tend to see between 6 and 12 messages per minute (depending on signal strength/operator performance). This would require between an hour and a half and 3 hours to send 1000 messages.

So it's highly variable.

The trial version of NowSMS has a 30 message per minute limitation.

But you can still run some simple tests to see whether or not you can hit 30 messages per minute.

Try enabling "SMS Access" = "GPRS" in the properties for the GSM modem in the "SMSC" list.

Then try sending 60 or so messages, and see how long it takes. You can see the time delay in the SMSOUT-yyyymmdd.LOG file which records the timestamp when the message was accepted.

Also try different operator SIMs to see relative performance on different networks.

P.S. - Keep in mind that you can also add additional modems to improve throughput.

Hi Byrce,

In an application that we do not send any outgoing SMSs but only wish to process incoming messages, are the numbers the same as the ones you provided below.
And since we are only receiving messages, whether we permanently lose any of the messages sent to us because of our processing capacity (since the operator is expected to store and forward the unreceived messages at a later time) depends on the operator right?

Thanks,
Özgür

Hi Özgür,

Yes, it is roughly the same, but slightly faster ... and your assumption is correct.

In NowSMS, make sure that you select "Direct to Modem" for "SMS Message Storage", as that will minimise the processing of the message that occurs at the modem itself.
