Hello,

we are trying to evaluate your product for usage in one of our projects with a Nokia 6680 handset. The phone is properly installed with the latest drivers and software from the Nokia site. We can test/query the modem and add it without problems to NowSMS. However, when we try to send a message from the web interface the log says the following:

--

2006-12-19 14:31:56,4587DBB1.req,192.168.1.210,+40742xxxxxx,Retry Pending - ERROR - Modem Response (2): +CMS ERROR: 500 -- Nokia 6680 USB Modem

--

We also tried to add the SMSC like explained in http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/126.html but without result. This particular phone seems to be supported (http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/4218.html) but we couldnt get past that error. We can send SMS with the Nokia Suite software though.

Our config file is as follows:

--

[SMSGW]
Modem1=Nokia 6680 USB Modem
[Modem - Nokia 6680 USB Modem]
SMSAccess=GSM
ReceiveSMS=No
ReceiveMMS=No
SMSC=+40744946000

--

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I am not sure what to suggest. "CMS ERROR 500" means that the modem is reporting an "unknown error". So these are always the toughest to troubleshoot.

In most instances, this particular error is related to a signal strength (or lack of signal) issue.

However, it sounds like that is not the issue in your case, as I assume that you do not have any problem sending SMS with the Nokia Suite (test again by sending several messages via Nokia PC Suite to make sure it wasn't a one time fluke that it worked ... I am assuming that it is not a fluke).

I would try with and without the "SMSC" address setting present. And try with "SMSAccess" set to "GSM" and to "GPRS". One of the combinations of settings may work.

Beyond that, do you have Nokia PC Suite completely unloaded/exited when you try sending with NowSMS? Usually if PC Suite is running, you won't be able to connect to the modem with any other application ... but we have seen problems like you describe with some PC Cards, where if the manufacturer's proprietary software is running, some functions are not available. So verify that PC Suite is not running.

I have one other thing that you might want to try. In the "[Modem - Nokia 6680 USB Modem]" section of SMSGW.INI, try adding ModemTextMode=Yes. Do this for a test only ... it configures NowSMS to only send text messages via the modem and to use text mode commands. I am curious if they are also failing with this error.
