I noticed NowSMS can use the mailto command in 2way commands. I tried configuring one and included the subject, cc and body in addition to the recipient. I triple checked that my mailto sytax is correct. No email was sent.

Here is the syntax I used (I replaced the email address because I do not want to post my real email here):
mailto:test@test.com?cc=test2@test.com&subject=Support&body=@@FULLSMS@@

Why is it not working? Does NowSMS not support the full syntax usage of the mailto command?

When I use a simple mailto command (recipient only), it does work

Please assist

Hi Mickey,

No, we do not support any parameters on the mailto: command within a 2-way command.

Although, I will say that does sound like a good idea.

The way that the mailto: command is currently implemented, it assumes that everything after the "mailto:" is an e-mail address. So if you just specified mailto:test@test.com, it should work. The subject line is hardcoded as "SMS", and the content of the SMS message is put into the text of the message.

If you put "?" and additional paremeters after "mailto:", then these parameters would be considered part of the e-mail address, and the message would not get routed properly.

I will check with engineering to see how difficult it would be to add support for parameters like "cc" and "subject".

Hi ,

I noticed the following addition in version 2008

"SMS to E-mail - Add template setting to allow some minor changes to the standard SMS to e-mail format (From /Subject /Message Text) used by NowSMS. To change the SMS to e-mail format, edit MMSC.INI, and add an SMSEMailTemplate= setting to define a template for the SMS to e-mail format. The following replacement variables are supported in the template: @@FromAddress@@ (e-mail address of sender), @@FromName@@ (full name of sender), @@Subject@@ (subject of message), @@Text@@ (text of message). The default template is SMSEMailTemplate=@@FromAddress@@ /@@Subject@@ /@@Text@@ "

Couple you please explain more how this template can be used ?

Hi,

That description is a bit misleading ... it should be "E-Mail to SMS" instead of "SMS to E-Mail".

So the functionality described works for changing the template that is used when routing an e-mail message to SMS.

By default, when NowSMS routes an e-mail to SMS, it formats the text of the SMS message as follows:

From /Subject /Message Text

The MMSC.INI file setting mentioned allows for this format to be changed.

Unfortunately, there is no additional flexibility for the SMS to e-mail side. Engineering is currently looking at expanding the "mailto:" URL support to allow for additional parameters, but I don't have a time estimate for this completion yet.

Follow-up ...

We've posted an interim update for NowSMS that adds extended support for the "mailto:" command within the 2-way command facility.

This update can be downloaded from http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsmsupdate.zip.

Below are the details describing this change:

quote:

* 2-way SMS: Enhance mailto: command support for e-mail to SMS in the 2-way command facility by supporting additional parameters including cc, subject and body. For example, mailto:nowsms@nowsms.com?cc=nowsms@nowsms.net&subject=Received%20SMS%20Message&body=@@FULLSMS@@.

Hi Des,

I don't think the description is misleading, what I want is that NowSMS will receive an SMS and translate it to an email...
I tried downloading the update but all I got was a 6 byte file, can you check this please?

Thanks
Mickey

Hi Mickey,

I didn't mean that your description was misleading, I meant that ours was. I'll check the file tomorrow when I have full access to the server.

Hi Mickey,

I checked the URL link, and it downloads fine for me. It's just under 7.5MB.

Maybe something was wrong with the web server over the weekend?

If you're still having problems, try clearing the cache in your web browser. Try right-clicking on the link and saving that way.

If you still don't get anywhere, I can try e-mailing it to you. The only issue with e-mail is that the e-mail encoding would probably push the size over 10MB which could be an issue with some e-mail systems.

So the direct download is preferable, I just can't imagine what could be going wrong.

Regarding your 2-way update on your 2008 version.
Would it be possible for you to do the same update for your previous versions, 2005, 2006 etc.?
