How to convert a rtttl file or midi file to hex

I believe a lot of older Samsung phones could only have ring tones programmed by keypresses on the phone itself.

Then Samsung started supporting Nokia Smart Messaging. So some Samsung phones can receive ring tones using the Nokia Smart Messaging format. Samsung licensed the Nokia Smart Messaging specification from Nokia in November 2001, and Samsung phones that support Nokia Smart Messaging started appearing on the market in spring 2002.

Samsung has also started to support EMS in some newer handsets, but you're probably better off with Nokia Smart Messaging.

And, of course, MIDI over WAP push is another option for the newer phones.

Sorry, no I don't have a handy list.

A few pointers ...

Nokia uses RTTTL format, based upon the Nokia Smart Messaging specification, which can be downloaded from http://www.forum.nokia.com.

(Sony)Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens and Alcatel defined EMS to be an intended open industry standard, since Nokia claimed Nokia Smart Messaging to be proprietary and wanted other handset manufacturers to license it. (Samsung is the only company that I know of which licensed it. Since that time, Nokia has opened up their license to Smart Messaging, and I have seen some smart messaging functions supported on some SonyEricsson phones.) EMS uses iMelody format. Pointers to EMS spec information can be found in the following thread: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/3312.html

Siemens also has a proprietary format, SEO, which supports MIDI. The following thread has a link to the SEO specification: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/2018.html

Newer phones can receive MIDI ringtones via WAP push (or MMS). And some of them also support more advanced formats that are sent via WAP push, such as SMAF. Some phones even support small WAV files, or AMR format as ring tones. All of these formats are generally sent as links to a WAP push.

The following site has good information about some other formats as well:

file2hex is described here (along with a link):

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/71.html

It is a very simple tool. Basically it just takes a binary file (like an OTA bitmap for Nokia Smart Messaging), and dumps the hex string for the file data.
