greetings,

i have tried several sms gateway but i prefer to use the nowsms because in my opinion this is the only site that has a forum where you can get a quick help from the support tech, and also which you will learn from the experts.

1) i am now trying out my sony ericsson k700i. it worked successfully sending a message from the web interface. but when i tested sending a mail (through yahoo) to SMS (to my own mobile number)i can't received the message. what should i do?

2) to my knowledge, nowsms support email to sms, am i right? but i'm confused of this "domain" thing; i'm using a mail server which my ISP provided, but my IP adress is not static, but DHCP. does this matter?

hope anybody can give me help here, thank you.

Hi Leonie,

If you're not sure about the "domain" thing, then the message is probably never making it to NowSMS.

The way that we support receiving e-mail and routing it to NowSMS is that NowSMS looks (to the outside world) like an SMTP mail server.

So it needs a domain name associated with it, which might be a subdomain of an existing domain (e.g., sms.domain.com).

From that point, the issues involved in setting it up, are the same as those involved with setting up any other mail server.

Basically, your domain name needs to have an "MX" record registered in the internet DNS. When you setup a web server, it gets an "A" record in internet DNS. An "MX" record is specific to e-mail servers. The "MX" record points to an "A" record that resovles to the IP address of the NowSMS server.

It sounds like you don't have a domain, or infrastructure for all of this. For testing, it is possible to use services like www.no-ip.com, which will let you setup dyamic DNS and an MX record. It's free for subdomains of their existing domains, or a small fee if you want to use your own domain name.

But basically, this "domain thing" is very important ... because that is how other mail servers on the internet know how to reach another mail server.

Hi Bryce,

Thank you for the information you relay. it really helps me learned much specially for a new one like me who knows nothing about the structure of this system. now, i eventually grasped everything.

just as i asked before, is it really important that i should get a static ip address rather than a dynamic when using nowsms?

If you want to use e-mail to SMS or MMS, and you don't have a static IP, then you need to use a system like www.no-ip.com. It lets you create a host name to associate with your IP address, and you can also have an MX record that supports mail exchange. It's free if you use a host in one of their domains, they charge if you want to use your own domain name. I've used it on my home network for years.

The key is that you need to have a static host name, and an MX record in DNS, in order to receive e-mail messages. For a production system, I'd recommend a static IP address, but for testing, a dynamic DNS servcie like www.no-ip.com works just fine.

This thread has all of the e-mail to SMS/MMS info:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/3451.html

But I don't have anything that covers the use of a dynamic DNS services.

But basically, the way it works with no-ip.com, is like this.

You create an account. Then you register a host name, maybe "leonie.no-ip.com" (there are several different domains in which you can create it for free).

The service will create this host name, and associate it with your current IP address. In order to keep track of your changing IP address, they have a client piece of software that you need to download and install on your PC.

You can then edit the host name definition, and add a mail host to it. Here, you just put the host name back in to the first mail host field, and you can leave the others blank.

But basically, they should have better instructions there than I could offer.

hi bryce,

it's been a long time since i didn't respond to your mail. i have been on a vacation. how are you now?

i am now applying all your instructions; have registered a host name in the www.no-ip.com; but i'm lost here, i need your help...

i just don't know where to place which host name in the nowsms MMSC configuration dialog. when i registered at no-ip it requires my account name as "lpelicane@pldtdsl.net", then i registered a hostname "texport.myftp.org" which corresponds to IP address 58.69.64.31.

my question is:
1) what should i put in the localhost name or IP addres?
2) what should i put in the domain name for SMS Email?

thanks in advance. best regards

Put "texport.myftp.org" in as the domain name for SMS e-mail.

Put any value in as the "local host name or IP address" (maybe just "texport").

Also, note that on no-ip.com, you need to add a mail record (with "texport.myftp.org" as the mail host) to your host name entry. Right now there is no MX record associated with it.

• how would i add up a mail record to my host name entry? should i just put in "texport.myftp.org"?

pls. bear with my ignorance. simple things in the viewpoint of experts just seems complicated for a beginner like me...
thanks again
