Hi,
We are using a registered version of NowSMS Lite to send MMS notifications to our customers. The MMS contains a subject, text and an attached jpg image. The MMS looks fine on the iPhone, but on the Android it shows up as a slideshow and the user can't see the text or the image unless they click on a play button. If I remove the text and only send a subject and jpg, then it shows correctly, but the subject field is too short for the info we need to send. Is there any configuration I can use to correct this? Thanks.

Hi Mike,

Edit the MMSC.INI file and under the [MMSC] header add EMailAutoSmil=No

This oddly named setting will disable all automatic generation of SMIL content (which is the slideshow presentation language), so it should do what you want.

In current versions of NowSMS Lite, this MMSC.INI file will be found in \ProgramData\NowSMS (Note that the ProgramData directory is hidden in most Windows installations which may make it more difficult to locate).

Hi Des

I tried sending the mms content via the HTTP GET URL and on android it was a slide show. As mentioned in above thread only if text is removed then it works.

EMailAutoSmil=No works only for SMTP right?. Is there some other setting we can use to disable auto generation of SMIL content totally on the NowSMS server?

Kindly let me know
Thanks

Hi Sam,

The EMailAutoSmil=No setting applies to anywhere that NowSMS automatically generates a SMIL file.

Originally we only added this SMIL for e-mail to MMS, but we later extended it to HTTP submissions because some older devices had message display issues if there was no SMIL. The setting disables the automatic SMIL generation in both scenarios.

The next update will change the auto generated SMIL so that Android does not treat a simple image + text message as a slide show. But this setting is a good work-around.

The other thread does show an Android screen capture with a message that is in slideshow mode. But I believe the actual question is about the second message and quoted text being included in a message reply that goes out from e-mail to MMS. We are updating logic to strip quoted text when a message is sent from e-mail to MMS.

Follow-up ... Sam was correct, this was related to that other thread...sort of.

Different Android skins (and different versions of Android) handle things slightly different.

On that other thread that Sam referenced, the picture was displayed together with the text and a "play" button...unless the message text was very long, in which case you had to press play to see the picture.

I didn't pay attention to the presence of the "play" button, but to the fact that the picture was hidden in the case of very long text.

In an updated version of NowSMS, we are addressing two issues:

1.) For e-mail to MMS, we are removing "quoted text" (sometimes called "original text") when converting the e-mail to MMS. So the lines that start with ">" will not appear in the MMS.

2.) Auto generated SMIL that contains one image plus text will be set for a single page display instead of multiple pages, avoiding the play button.

An updated version of NowSMS with these changes is now available at http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms20130515.zip.

For Mike, the original poster in this thread, this update is not yet available for NowSMS Lite, so continue to use the work-around.

Hi Des

Unfortunately am not able to get this setting working:

Auto generated SMIL that contains one image plus text will be set for a single page display instead of multiple pages, avoiding the play button.

I still get the play button on sending via HTTP GET URL and even while sending from android to android using NowSMS as the MMSC.

Would you like to see any logs on this?

Kindly let me know

Thanks

Hi Sam,

The fact that you see this for Android to Android messaging suggests that it is normal.

We do not insert this auto-generated SMIL for device to device MMS.

Our concern was not with the presence of the "play" button, but more the fact that a simple text+picture message was only showing text in the Android messaging application and it was not obvious that there was also a picture included.

Different Android versions and different vendor skins for Android have different ways of displaying these messages. Our objective is only that a simple text+picture MMS should look to be a similar format whether phone-to-phone or NowSMS web-to-phone.

If you still have concerns, I'd like to see device screen shots for understanding of what the issue or concern is.
