Generally speaking, we haven't had great experience with using Motorola phones as GSM modems.

In fact, because of some differences in how Motorola phones implement the "AT command" support for sending SMS messages, most versions of NowSMS will not recognise a Motorola phone as a GSM modem. The error that is returned by NowSMS is "Modem does not support SMS".

We've done some more research, and have discovered that Motorola does include support for this GSM modem/SMS functionality in many of their phones, however they implement some functions differently.

So, we've just posted an update, v5.51f, which can be downloaded from http://www.nowsms.com/download/latestpatch.zip. This is a ZIP file that can be installed on top of any existing v5.51 release. (Stop currently running NowSMS services, use the files in the ZIP to update the existing installation, then restart the NowSMS services.)

This version will get past the "Modem does not support SMS" error on Motorola phones that do include this GSM modem/SMS support.

However, be forewarned that our testing has revealed that a number of these Motorola phones do not support sending binary messages because of an apparent bug in their GSM modem support when processing any message that includes "user data header". (User data header is used for WAP Push, MMS notifications, EMS, Nokia Smart Messaging, and long text messages.) For this reason, using a Motorola phone as a GSM modem might only allow you to send text messages. Although binary SMS messages are not supported, it will still be possible to send MMS messages by routing MMS messages to an operator MMSC over GPRS.

To route MMS messages to an operator MMSC over GPRS, you need to add an "MMSC Routing" definition to connect to the operator MMSC over GPRS, and make that your default route for sending out MMS.

General configuration info on this setup can be found here:
