When people talk about sending "SMS over GPRS", they are usually talking about one of two different things.

In the context of using a "GSM modem" (or buitl-in SMS client on a mobile phone) to send/receive SMS, there is an updated protocol that the phone can use to send SMS messages through the operator SMSC using the packet network (GPRS) instead of circuit-switched. Sending SMS over GPRS in this fashion costs the same amount (you are still sending through the operator), but the primary advantage is that it is faster.

When people talk about loading application software on the phone (such as Java applications), and talk about sending SMS over GPRS, they are usually talking about making a TCP/IP connection with GPRS and submitting SMS messages to be sent via an SMS service provider ... the same what that you would connect to an SMS service provider from a computer. The advantage here is that indepdent SMS service providers will generally allow you to purchase bulk quantities of SMS messages cheaper than what you would pay your mobile operator.

Please note that this is the support forum for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway software product, and I do not have specific SMS service providers to recommend for such an application.

Hi Bryce,

As you explined "SMS over GPRS is Mobile makeing a GPRS connection & submitting messages to the SMSC".

Can you please guide on the fallowing issues.
1. What is the standard port (on mobile) for receiving the sms messages from SMSC over GPRS?

2.If mobile is lauched to the n/w, but it is not doing any data session ( no IP), then How can SMSC will deliver the SMS to the mobile ?

3. PI <===> SMSC <===> mobile
To send push messages, paking of the message is going to change for SMS over GPRS ? any specifications for this flow ?

I am trying to understand the flow. Could you please guide me on sms over GPRS

Thanks in advance
Ramakrishna

Hi Ramakrishna,

SMS over GPRS does not use IP. It operates at a lower level of the GPRS protocol. (And you cannot do it yourself over IP.)

You can find more information in SMS specifications such as 3GPP TS 23.040 (and related protocols referenced for that specification). But I don't think you'll find what you want.
