Hi, No. Sorry, but the SonyEricsson P800, P900 and P910 do not support a GSM modem interface. They do support some modem functionality, but they do not implement the AT commands for sending or receiving SMS. -bn

Bryce, Are there any patches for P910i (that can be installed on the phone) to do this? I have found one called PiAccessLink but it supports only Bluetooth as of now. Any ideas? I am sorry to post this in here though. Regards, Yaswanth

Hi Yaswanth, I'm not aware of any patches. Basically the AT command interface that SonyEricsson supports in these devices only allows the device to be used as a data modem. But I also wasn't aware of PiAccessLink. That looks interesting ... I will have to give it a try sometime when I have some time, as it looks interesting. However, I can understand why it would only work with Bluetooth and not with a cable connection. It can create and advertise a new Bluetooth service on the device, but there is no programmatic way to replace the default cable interface. -bn

A follow-up. I downloaded piAccess Link to give it a try. But unfortunately, it doesn't support sending SMS via AT commands. (It has a number of other tests that causes NowSMS to report that the modem does not support SMS ... which I disabled to allow me to get this far.) I checked the developer documentation on their web site ... and sure enough, the only AT commands that they support are for reading SMS from the device. The sending commands are listed as something that will be supported in the future. Unfortunately, it seems somewhat difficult to navigate their support forum to provide them with any feedback. NowSMS fails to initialise the modem because the following AT commands are not supported: AT+CSMS=0 - We use this command as a basic check to see if the modem supports the AT commands for SMS. ATE0V1 - We use this command to turn echo off and ask for verbose response codes. (piAccess Link supports the E0 part, but not V1.) If NowSMS got an OK response from the above two commands, then NowSMS will allow the modem to be added. However, without any support for sending messages (AT+CGMS), the current version of piAccess Link does not offer any value. It does look interesting if they will support sending SMS in the future. I would also like to see them support AT+CSMS=0 and ATE0V1 commands so that the NowSMS modem initialisation checks work ok. But I do not see any easy way to provide them with this feedback, so I'm posting it here ... and maybe someone involved with that project will see this and make the necessary changes. -bn |
