I am trying to figure out if this product can be used in the US to send and recieve SMS from the subscribers of the 6 major national carriers (e.g., AWS (TDMA&GSM), Nextel, Cingular, T-mobile, Verizon)? Has anyone been successfule? Can I use any handset which I can tether to my computer? Any insight would be appreciated. | |||

We only support a GSM modem interface, so if you're going to use a phone, it needs to be a GSM phone. As long as the mobile operator whose SIM you place into the mobile phone provides cross operator SMS support, then you're fine. I've used a T-Mobile US SIM myself for testing. The SonyEricsson T68i is a good phone for use as a modem (it can support serial, USB, infrared or bluetooth connections). PC cards like the Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 are also a good option. The main problem in the US is that there is only text message SMS interoperability between the carriers. There is limited (if any) binary SMS message interoperability between the carriers. -bn | |||

Thanks for the information. Do I need to get an external modem? If so where can I find it in the US for a US T-mobile phone with a US T-mobile SIM? Have been unsuccessful so far. Any guidance here would be appreicated. | |||

I haven't seen a good external GSM modem for the US market. Supposedly Multitech has one (http://www.multitech.com/PRODUCTS/Families/MultiModemGSM/), but I haven't been able to find anywhere that sells it, so I don't know if the product is released or how well it works. The SonyEricsson T68i with a cable is a great option. (Get a DCU-11 USB cable or DRS-11 serial cable for it.) Or go with the SonyEricsson T610 ... I think T-Mobile US has a rebate on it at present. The only issue with using a phone as a modem is that while it can be used to send and receive SMS, and to send MMS, it cannot receive MMS through the modem interface with NowSMS. -bn | |||
