Hi All,

I am evaluating Now SMS/MMS Gateway v2007.06.27.
I have configured my Nokia 6300 as SMSC and checked "Receive SMS Messages" in properties. I am testing 2-way option and have not yet created any commands in the SMS command table. But I am not able to receive any messages in the gateway.
It does not create SMS-IN folder. Does anyone know if Nokia 6300 works for receiving msgs ?

regards,
-Darshan

Hi Darshan,

Unfortunately that is a limitation of the software design of most newer Nokia phones. The SMS client on the mobile phone grabs all of the received messages and prevents them from being accessed via the GSM modem interface.

This has been a long time limitation of the Nokia Series 60 (a.k.a. S60) user interface. However, Nokia seems to have extended this design limitation to newer Series 40 devices over the past 12 to 18 months (Series 40 3rd Edition). Older Nokia Series 40 phones had no such limitation.

Thanks Bryce for the prompt response.

This is a major issue for testing mobile apps.
I tried with Nokia 6230i but that too didn't work.

I found a long running thread on this forum which contains phones which has been known to support SMS receive function. Does now.sms (the company) maintain any authoritative document/link containing such list ?

Hi Darshan,

I don't disagree that this is a major problem. But it is outside of our control.

Unfortunately there are hundreds of models of phones out there.

And while it is convenient to be able to use a GSM phone as a modem, the best solution is a dedicated GSM modem device.

Here are some observations that I posted on another thread ... which I think you will find helpful, especially with regard to Nokia devices.

quote:

Each major manufacturer seems to have hundreds of different models, and they are constantly being updated. So rather than list individual models and model numbers, I'm going to list capabilities by "product family".

You can find out information about which product family a phone belongs to by checking the technical specifications for the phone at the manufacturer's web site.

For example, with Nokia phones, the two main product families are Series 60 (S60) and Series 40. Within both of these families, there are different platform versions that Nokia refers to as editions. Nokia has historically had a very good GSM modem implementation in their mobile phones, however they have removed the ability to receive messages over the GSM modem interface from recent models, which limits their usefulness. These are the capabilities of the Nokia product families as they relate to NowSMS:

Nokia Series 60 (S60) phones - Can send SMS and MMS. Cannot receive SMS or MMS.

Nokia Series 40 phones prior to "3rd edition" - Can send SMS and MMS. Can receive SMS. Cannot receive MMS.

Nokia Series 40 3rd Edition phones - Can send SMS and MMS. Cannot receive SMS or MMS.

SonyEricsson has also traditionally had very good GSM modem support, except in their phones that use the UIQ interface. The UIQ interface was first used in the P800/P900/P910/P990 series of devices, but it has also appeared in recent higher end models such as the M600 and W950. So you need to check the SonyEricsson web site to determine if a model that you are looking at uses the UIQ interface.

SonyEricsson phones that do NOT use UIQ - Can send SMS and MMS. Can receive SMS. Cannot receive MMS.

FWIW, I've personally used the SonyEricsson T68i, T610, T630, K700i, K750i, K800i, W800i and W810i ... and they are work great as a GSM modem using either a serial cable, USB cable or Bluetooth.

Motorola - The RAZR is quite ubiquitous, especially in the US, so chances are that you already have one. The RAZR is an ok GSM modem, except that it has a nasty limitation in that it cannot send or receive binary SMS messages via the GSM modem interface, only text messages. This is an issue if you want to experiment with binary message types such as EMS, WAP Push, OTA settings.

Motorola RAZR/KRZR - Can send/receive SMS ... but text messages only (no support for binary SMS message types like EMS, WAP Push, OTA Settings). Can send MMS. Cannot receive MMS.

There are other manufacturers as well. I see various Samsung models appear in people's posts here, but I don't have as good of an understanding of the product families from Samsung, so I can't give specific advice.

Nokia has a good chart of which phones are part of which family at: http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/matrix_all_1.html

You can select a model from the drop down list, and it will display the information.

Based upon this information, the 6300 is Series 40 3rd edition (feature pack 2), so our experience is that it definitely would not work.

But, I would expect the Nokia 6230i to be ok, as it uses Series 40 2nd edition. (That said, there is some ambiguity in the Nokia charts. The 6230 is clearly listed as a Series 40 2nd edition device. The 6230i says that it supports Series 40 Developer Platform v2.)

I've checked through my archives, and I've seen several instances where it looked like people were using the Nokia 6230i as a modem to both send and receive SMS. But it was right around the middle of 2005 that Series 40 3rd edition came out, so perhaps different models of this phone shipped with different versions.

(The big question is why did Nokia remove this capability ...)

Thanks again.

Nokia 6230i wasn't reliable. It allowed receiving few SMSs and then stopped both sending & receiving! I tried all sorts of combination in SMSC properties but to no avail. The 6300 at least worked consistently for sending out (and not receiving). My next try is going to be Nokia 6310.

Currently, I am only interested in receiving/sending plain text SMS. At a later stage I would sure get a dedicated GSM modem as advised by you.

-Darshan
