Hi all, I want to know more about how to send MMS content data like polyphonic, color graphic picture, java games,etc. I've read some discussion about it that its require WAP gateway but some other discussion could be use PPP connection with GPRS Modem. If I use WAP gateway, I Don't require GPRS Modem, vice versa? If use GPRS modem how to send the content data, and what GPRS Modem type can do it? I have little more information about PPP connection, can you describe me about that? Thanks, Rizal | |||

Hi Rizal, I'll try to sort through some of the confusion. There are two ways of sending an MMS message, which are best explained if we first look at how the process of receiving an MMS message works. When a mobile phone receives an MMS message, what it is actually receiving is an MMS notification message which it receives over SMS (technically it is a WAP push, and it doesn't have to arrive over SMS, but in practice on today's networks, it does). This MMS notification message contains header information about the MMS message, and a URL pointer that the recipient must fetch in order to retrieve the content of the MMS message. The receiving phone then makes a data connection (usually GPRS) to retrieve the URL that has the MMS message content. Our Now SMS/MMS Gateway can generate the MMS notification message directly, and generate a dynamic URL that tells the receiving phone to fetch the MMS message content from the Now SMS/MMS Gateway. However, in order to send/receive MMS, the MMS client on a mobile phone is preconfigured with settings for how it makes its data connection to send/receive MMS. Those settings may point to a GPRS Access Point Name (APN) and WAP gateway that do not allow connections to any servers other than the operator MMSC. In this type of situation, while you are able to deliver the MMS notification message to the mobile, the mobile is unable to fetch the content of the MMS message, preventing MMS message delivery. The alternative to this type of direct MMS delivery is to send MMS messages through the operator MMSC. In this case, all of the content of the MMS message is transferred to the operator MMSC. The operator MMSC generates the MMS notification message and the URL for the MMS message content is a dynamically generated one on the operator MMSC. In order to submit an MMS message to an operator MMSC, if your operator supports MM7, EAIF or SMTP (MM4) interfaces, then you might be able to purchase an account with your operator that allows you to submit MMS messages through that account. (These types of connections can easily be configured in the NowSMS gateway on the "MMSC Routing" page.) If your operator does not support this, or the cost is prohibitive, then it is also possible to submit the MMS messages to the operator MMSC over a GSM/GPRS modem. The Now SMS/MMS Gateway also supports this type of configuration. In this case, when there is an MMS message to send, NowSMS initiates a GPRS connection (PPP is used over GPRS), and connects to the operator WAP gateway to send the MMS message through the operator MMSC, in the same way that the MMS client on a mobile phone would. With WAP Push, you do not have the problem above with operators blocking external MMSCs. But the WAP push user interface can vary quite a bit in different PCs, and users are not as familiar with it as they are with receiving an MMS message. The Now SMS/MMS Gateway has a multimedia WAP push function where you can submit multimedia objects to the gateway, and it delivers them via WAP push. -bn | |||

Hi, I am trying out mms over wap push method. What I am not clear about is whether as a VASP I need to connect to the operator SMSC over SMPP protocol or do I have to connect to the operator MMSC using MM7 protocol. I am assuming that an SMSC connection is enough for wap push but if operator mmsc connection is required, please explain..... | |||

Direct delivery MMS (if not blocked by your operator) can be done via an SMSC connection. WAP Push can be done via an SMSC connection. To submit messages through an operator MMSC requires a different type of connection, such as MM7. This discussion forum is intended for support of the Now SMS/MMS Gateway product. And therefore, questions that pertain to this product receive the highest priority for replies. From a NowSMS product perspective, this thread already provides considerable information on available options for connecting NowSMS into an operator network so that you are able to send an MMS message. Once connected, the web interface of NowSMS could be used to submit an MMS message and verify proper configuration.
