Hello
Lately I purchased Multitech MTCBA-C-UN3 CDMA USB modem for Verizon Wireless (we are evaluating possible solutions for our SMS server). I can send/receive SMS messages via Hyper Terminal, but when I try to use NowSMS I have the same issue like described in "Issue with Multitech MTCBA-C CDMA" topic posted on Posted on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/24201.html . I tried to work around as described, but with no success. Is there any solution for the problem? I use for testing Windows XP Pro SP3 with all patches and security updates with the newest avaliable version of the NowSMS.
Thank you

Hi Artur,

Enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG, and let's take a closer look at what is happening.

Hi Artur,

I think you need an update to deal with the modem getting stuck.

Download the update at http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms2009rc.zip.

Then edit SMSGW.INI, and make sure that ModemSendWorkaround=Yes is present in the [Modem - Driver name] section.

That should work.

We need to find some good way to identify this particular modem to automatically enable this setting.

Let me know how you get on with this ... and I'm going to look into ways of automatically identifying the modem.

The patch works perfectly. Are there any additional limitations if I use this patch - especially does it limits number of send/receive messages per minute?

The trial version has a limit of 30 messages per minute ... but you are unlikely to reach anywhere near that speed on the modem.

It seems that now we have a problem with receiving messages - I replied to the send message and there is no message in SMS-IN folder, but log file shows that the message is processed several times.

I need to have a developer look at that. It's very interesting.

I think you can get around this problem with the following:

Edit SMSGW.INI, and under the [Modem - Driver name] section, add CommandPostInit1=AT+CNMI=0

I need to get a colleague to look at this in more detail, but to me it looks like we're not handling receiving unsolicited messages in "text mode" correctly (with GSM modems we are normally using "PDU mode"). The above command will force the modem into a setting where NowSMS polls for received messages, which should work better.

Messages per minute or second are product licensing options. I try to keep it to tech here, but you can reach our sales department via any of the contact methods listed at http://www.nowsms.com/contact.htm.

My mistake.

I meant to say CommandPostInit1=AT+CNMI=0,0

That's not the perfect solution, but I think there is a good chance that it will work until we can take a closer look at the core problem.

Hello Des
Any news?
It looks that with regular version, which I downloaded, I can receive sms-es but I can not send anything. The version which you asked me to install allows me for sending messages but have a problem with receiving.
Do you have something mixed ?

Hi Artur,

I should have some news for you tomorrow.

We don't have one of those modems, but we're testing text mode issues with some other modems that should be similar.

Hi Artur,

We posted an update to address an unrelated issue, and it's got a fix for processing received messages via a text mode only modem.

Download the update at http://www.nowsms.com/download/ashot.zip, and let's see if that resolves the issues.

I'm not seeing any messages coming in.

Can you remove that statement that I had you add earlier:

It seems that now I cannot receive sms mesages at all even if I use software which come with the modem. I have to talk to Verizon and resolve the issue. I will let you know what is going on.
Thank you.

As AT modems come with a standard set of AT commands and a non-standard set of AT commands,
I prefer manufacturers providing end-users with manual describing each one AT command.

In case of Huawei, there is no support at all,
claiming any AT command implemented as proprietary.

Contacting Verizon, in this case, first, is a good solution to learn about non-standard AT commands implemented.

Another solution is to run more terminal tests
using standard AT SMS commands.

The modem that Artur is using does not come from Verizon ... it comes from Multitech (using a Wavecom chipset). Verizon is just the carrier on which the modem operates.

What's unusual about this particular modem is that it works on a CDMA network, but it implements some GSM modem commands.

A technical manual is available from the Multitech web site. However, there are a number of inconsistencies that exist between the modem's documentation and actual real world responses.

The problem is, it seems to be the only modem solution available for CDMA networks which supports SMS.

Hello Des
Verizon did some maintenance on the account and now it works great. Thank you very much for all your help.
One more question - when we send SMS we require that person after reading message replay to the sender with "OK ". If we use Verizon web site we can see replays to the messages. Is it possible to implement this functionality with NowSMS? We can send 2/3 messages and we would like to now which replay with "OK" is for which message.
Thank you once more for all your help.

Hi Artur and Des,
How is Verizon treating you? I know their customer support is supposed to be fabulous. Is their network treating you well? Faster than 15 SMS/min?
Best,
Nathan

Hi Nathan
In my opinion Verizon Customer service is pretty good. We didn't have any issue which we cannot resolve with them. Our company operates in wide area, and one of the reason which we changed AT&T to Verizon, is their service coverage. They have a lot less dead spots in their services. We didn’t try send 15 SMS/min, and we won’t be even close enough in a next few years. I’m sure it’s even not possible with Multitech CDMA modem which we have. Unfortunately we don’t have a lot options for CDMA network (do you know different CDMA modem which implements interface for sending/receiving text messages?).

Hi Artur,

I'm not sure about CDMA, but in GSM there's no way of actually matching a reply up with its response.

It's a frustrating limitation of SMS in that there is no attribute from the original message which is carried over to the reply.

Whether or not there's a good way to get around this limitation really depends on your application.

Here are some techniques ...

1.) Only have one pending message for any one given recipient at a time. If you can get away with this, you know what the reply is referring to. (In GSM environments, you have the ability to specify "replacement type" messages which allow you to send a new message to replace an existing message in the phone which can help this type of application. I don't believe that this is possible in CDMA environments.)

2.) Send messages with different sender addresses. If using modems, this requires multiple modems. This is the best way to handle it, but obviously, it is expensive. Similar to 1, you can track which message went out from which sender to which recipient, so that you can match up the reply.

3.) Require a more complex response than just "OK" . For example, ask for a code number in the response which will allow you to correlate.

Most operator systems (for example e-mail to SMS systems) use technique #2. They've got a bank of 100 short codes reserved for that system, and each time a message goes to a particular recipient, a new short code is used until it loops back around.

Most modem users have to settle for #3.

Hello
It seems I'm able to send/receive text messages, but there is still one issue - maximum length of the text message which NowSMS is sending is 14 characters. I'm sending over the web interface. What is wrong?

Hi Artur,

I don't understand what you mean by this.

Do you mean that if you send a message longer than 14 characters, you only receive the first 14 characters?

Or do you mean that if you send a message longer than 14 characters you don't receive any message at all?

The log file indicates that the modem is accepting the message. And I don't see any truncation evidenced in the log.

I'm really starting to dislike this particular modem. But I don't give up easily.

Try adding ModemMaxBytesPerSend=1 to the [SMSGW] section of SMSGW.INI. I'd be VERY surprised if this made a difference, but maybe we are overflowing a buffer.

If that doesn't make a difference ... as I'm expecting that it won't ... then are you running on Vista or XP? On XP there's a program called HyperTerminal that can be used for some manual modem tests. But it was removed in Vista ...

I've got a theory that there's a bug in the modem firmware that we might be able to get around, but it requires some logic specific to that modem. Try the ModemMaxBytesPerSend setting first ... before we get into anything too modem specific.

Hi Des
Thank you for fast replay. I really appreciate NowSMS support - great job!
I use XP Pro sp3 with all updates installed.
The modem doesn't send messages longer than 14 chareacters. It seems that everything is fine, but message doesn't come to the recipient. Shorter messages are fine. I tried to send SMS using Hyper Terminal - it went the same. In this situation I will contact Multitech customer support and get any help from them. I will get back to you as soon as I find out what is going on.
PS ModemMaxBytesPerSend=1 didn't change anything.

Hi Artur,

Here's something to try in HyperTerminal.

AT+CMGS="phonenumber",len
message text<CTRL-Z>

In the Multitech documentation, it mentions this "len" parameter as being optional. It would be the length of the message text, not including the <CTRL-Z>.

This might not make any difference. But I was thinking that maybe it would if messages were being truncated.

Since the messages are not being truncated, and are just missing, I am less hopeful.

Hopefully Multitech will have an answer, as this seems like a very critical problem.

Hi Des
It was a problem with Verizon, not Multitech modem. They fixed it and I can send messages longer than 14 characters, but ... I do not receive any messages. They will fix it in 5 days.
Thank you
