I enabled both 2-way SMS and 2-way MMS but I dont see anything in the MMS directory (C:\Program Files\NowSMS\MMS-IN) after successfully sending one MMS.

I have not defined any rule for 2-way SMS, but this is not required, is it?
Also, when is the MMS actually captured and stored in the directory? When MMS is being sent from MS to MMSC or when MMSC sends notfication to MS for MMS delivery?

Thanks,
-Matt

Matt,

Are you using the T68i as a GSM modem?

There are a couple of issues with regard to receiving MMS messages that make life complicated.

1.) If you're using a GSM phone as the GSM modem, and the phone supports MMS or WAP push, then the phone will grab the message MMS message and try to process it without ever forwarding the message over the modem interface.

The only solutions here for a GSM modem are to either use an old modem that doesn't support either MMS or WAP push (I've successfully used an old Nokia 7110 for this purpose, but you'll see someone else in another thread who is trying this where their Nokia 7110 drops the modem interface and needs to be restarted whenever it receives an MMS notification message) ... or you need to use a dedicated GSM modem device like a Wavecom Fastrack modem.

2.) If the MMS is coming in from an operator MMSC, quite a few operators have their MMSCs firewalled off from the world. The way that the modem receives the MMS is that the modem only receives an MMS notification message which contains a pointer to a URL that contains the actual MMS message content. If the URL points to an MMSC that is blocked off by a firewall, then NowSMS can't download the MMS message content. (The upcoming v5.0 beta release has an option for dealing with this issue, where you can configure the gateway to make a GPRS connection over the modem and fetch the MMS message content via the operator WAP gateway just like the MMS client in a mobile phone would.)

To answer your other questions ... it is not necessary to define any 2-way SMS commands to support the inbound MMS.

The MMS content is stored in that directory after the gateway can fetch the MMS content from the URL embedded in the MMS notification.

I am using my own SMSC (SMPP connection to the MMSC) and nowSMS MMSC, so I control everything.
So, no i'm not using the T68i as a modem, just as a normal MS to send/receive SMS/MMS.

So my pb remains...the MMSCdebug.log file does not seem to provide info regarding this...
Any othe clue?

Thanks!

Matt,

Any clues would be in the SMSDEBUG.LOG.

Let me know what you see.

Matt,

I'd like to see some more info.

That information looks like an MMS message going out.

But I don't see anything coming in.

actually, what i do is i send a MMS from the phone to itself since i only have one mms phone.
so there is a MO MMS and then MT MMS. When the SMS/MMS gtw gets the notification for the MT MMS, then it should save the MMS files in the Mms-in dir., is that right?

thanks

Matt,

Right.

I guess what's confusing me is that if you are sending an MMS message from the phone to the gateway, you would be addressing the message to a phone number for which the gateway receives SMS messages through the SMSC.

the SMSC nevers sends anything to the gateway. only the gateway sends smpp to the SMSC which then sends it to the MSC and then MS...

what do you mean by "when the MMSC receives the notification"? to me the MMSC sends the notificaton to the sms/mms gateway (which then sends smpp to the SMSC) and if 2 way MMS is enabled then files will be stored in Mms-in dir.

Matt,

It sounds like there's probably some terminology problems at play here.

Our concept of "2-way MMS" is that the gateway is able to receive and process MMS messages that are sent to a phone number for which the gateway receives messages.

Logically this is independent of the MMSC. (Although the MMSC might be generating a notification that gets fed back into the gateway through SMS.)

It probably helps if you think about how the gateway supports 2-way SMS. The idea there is that you can send an SMS message in to a particular phone number that is received by the gateway, and the gateway can then process that message with an application.

The concept of 2-way MMS is similar to that. It's really about the gateway being able to receive MMS messages that are addressed to a special address.

I have a feeling that your question probably pertains to something different.

Bryce,

Here is my config:

MS1 ---- BSS/MSC ---SMSC------nowSMS_GTW
..................|
..........SGSN/GGSN ---- WAP ----nowSMS_MMSC

nowSMS_GTW and nowSMS_MMSC are the same machine.

I send a MMS from MS1 to MS1 (MS1 MMSC center is set to nowSMS_MMSC): 2-way MMS is enabled. Shall I get anything in the Mms-in directory?

This is how I understand it: when the MO MMS reaches the MMSC, the }MMSC sends a notification to the nowSMS_GTW (and at this point 2 way MMS should be triggered, shouldn't it?) which sends a smpp to the SMSC. The MS1 then recives the notification and activate a PDP context to download the MMS file located on the MMSC via the WAP GTW.

Thanks again for your help!

Matt,

No, you wouldn't get anything in the MMS-IN directory.

The MMSC would store a copy of the message under its MMSCDATA directory, and publish the URL for the recpient device to retrieve it via the notification.

The MMS-IN directory only comes in to play when a message is actually addressed to the gateway as an MT.

It would probably help if you think of "2-way MMS" as being independent of the MMSC. It's not really an MMSC function ... it's more an extension of the SMS gateway. It's for the gateway itself to be able to receive MMS (or SMS) messages that are addressed directly to an MT address for the gateway.
