I saw a previous post which said that there is some special configuration for the Merlin g100 to work with nowsms... What is that config?

I tried to set OldModemHandler=yes in the smsgw.ini under the [SMSGW] and that doesn't seem to help.

When I send AT commands through hyperterm it seems to work but with nowsms (v5.50 b20040503) I get alot of +CMS ERROR: 512 in the smsdebug.log

Thanks in advance for the help...

Got the card to send sms but nowsms doesn't think the messages are sent, so it continues to send them over and over... The smsdebug.log says this:

22:33:48:808 [2] ThreadProcessModem: Processing 40AAF1BC.req...
22:33:48:818 [2] ThreadProcessModem: OUT: AT+CMGS=29

22:33:49:068 [2] ThreadProcessModem: IN:

22:33:49:369 [2] ReceiveModemCommand: trying again...
22:33:49:639 [2] ReceiveModemCommand: trying again...
22:33:49:889 [2] ThreadProcessModem: ERROR - Error waiting for response from modem (2)
22:33:49:889 [2] ThreadProcessModem: Error: ERROR - Error waiting for response from modem (2)
22:33:50:150 [2] ReceiveModemCommand: trying again...

Any ideas?

We're trying to evaluate the nowsms product, but I need to know if its compatible with the novatel merlin g100 card or if using this product requires us to purchase different hardware... Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks!

Aj,

I apologise for the delay getting back to you. Unfortunately, we have no information about the Novatel Merlin G100.

We have had a few reports of problems with these devices in the past, but as I look back through the records, as we've made attempts to figure out what was going wrong, the users have generally just changed to a different modem device.

The "OldModemHandler" setting appears to be somewhat non-operational, as over time, we have not found any need to maintain the modem handling of our old versions.

This "ReceiveModemCommand: trying again..." message in your log file is very intriguing.

It appears that is a debug message from the logic that remains for the OldModemHandler setting. Based upon that debug message, and the timing associated with its appearance in the log file, it leads me to believe that the modem driver does not supported "overlapped I/O".

I'd be curious to see a debug log without that setting in place. The current modem handling in NowSMS should be able to handle a modem that does not support this (it's not really the modem that is the issue, but it's related to serial port handling ... an external device wouldn't have this issue, but a PC Card provides its own emulated serial port interface).

Give it a try without that setting, and post the debug log. We'll see if between the two logs, that gives us any ideas of settings that could be tweaked.

Hi Bryce, Thanks for the response...

I tried to send and recv using the g100 both with and without the OldModemHandler=yes. I've attached the debug logs from the 4 trials. The SMS send actually worked OK without the special setting... but recv isn't...

Thanks for your help,
-Aj

text/plainSend trial without OldModemHandler config
SMSDEBUG.LOG.SEND (2.0 k)

text/plainRecv trial without OldModemHandler config
SMSDEBUG.LOG.RECV (4.8 k)

text/plainSend with OldModemHandler=yes config
SMSDEBUG.LOG.OLD_SEND (2.8 k)

text/plainRecv with OldModemHandler=yes config
SMSDEBUG.LOG.OLD_RECV (4.8 k)

Bryce, Is there anything else you need to help debug this or is this card just not compatible with nowsms?

Thanks,
-Aj

Hi Aj,

Apologies for the delay. I had to take some time off, and my tech support backup was too overwhelmed with regular duties to be able to keep up with the discussion forums.

It looks like you had better results without the "OldModemHandler" config. The modem returned an error on the first send attempt, but then accepted the message on the second attempt. Unfortunately, when the modem returns an error, there's not much we can do other than retry. I don't think the error was related to anything that we did.

The receiving is a bigger question mark.

I'm going to send you an update to try. On the "SMSC" page in NowSMS, highlight the modem, and press "Properties". For "SMS Message Storage", select "Direct to Modem". Let's see if that works with the update that I'm about to e-mail you.

AJ

I've had this problem with Merlin G201. Try running PortMon sniffer, www.sysinternals.com on your machine and keep it always connected to your modem. It will prevent your Marlin card falling into power-saving mode, which is, according to your logs, happening. The sniffer won't interfere with NowSMS or any other programs, just limit history depth to prevent memory leaks.

Good luck!
