Dear Experts,my intention is to set up an sms ringtone server where people can dial a specific number for the ringtone and have the ringtone sent by text. There will be an arrangement with the GSM operator to deduct a certain ammount from the airtime/credit of the person requesting the ringtone so there is no need for credit card payment or anyform of payment for that matter.
What are the hardware and software requirements and how can this be set up from stage1.............
I will greatly appreciate it if you guys can help me out.
God Bless

Hi,

The type of arrangement that you will be using with your mobile operator is called "premium rate SMS". Basically, when you send a message out, the operator will charge the recipient for receiving the message, and you will receive a share of that revenue.

But one of the things that you will quickly discover is that different phones use different ring tone formats. There are a variety of messages in the discussion forum here discussing different ring tone formats.

The major formats are:

Nokia Smart Messaging, which is supported by all Nokia models.

EMS, which is supported by many (but not all) phones from (Sony)Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens, Alcatel and others.

For many newer phones, ring tones are sent in MIDI format via WAP Push over SMS.

But converting between the different formats is a lot of work. If you're just getting started with this, get ready to do a lot of experiments, or you might be able to find an existing ring tone portal software solution that you can license.

NowSMS is frequently used as middleware in facilitating the type of solution that you are describing. NowSMS manages the connection to one or more mobile operators, and everytime a new SMS is received, it sends it to your application over HTTP. Your application can then parse the request and return back a command to send the appropriate ring tone. However, we don't perform any conversions between the different ring tone formats.

If you do a search on this forum using the terms that I mentioned above, you may find some more helpful information.
