I read in the other thread that you can send sms through the internet.. i know how to do that, but if i have my own GSM/GPRS commercial modem conected to my computer, and i am using the now sms program, arnt i sending out the messages directly to the receiver through my own modem ?

Will i have to pay for an account with some one somewhere to use the wireless network ? And finally if i want to start a business type thing on the net fo rthe sending of sms and mms messages using my modem and the now sms registered version of the program is it profitable, will i need an account with a wireless service provider ? Can someone clarify this for me please.

A GSM/GRPS modem is a specialised device that accepts a SIM card, and connects to a mobile network the same way that a mobile phone does.

If you send/receive messages or data using that device, then you are charged just like you would be charged for doing the same via a mobile phone.

(Many modern mobile phones also support the ability to be used as a GSM modem when connected to a PC via a serial cable, USB cable, bluetooth or infrared.)

While there are some configurations where it makes sense to send out SMS messages through a GSM modem, it is usually cheaper to send messages through a service provider.

However, GSM modems are often a good inexpensive choice for being able to receive messages and developing interactive applications.

And in quite a few networks right now, using a GSM/GPRS modem is the only viable path for being able to send MMS messages.
