Hi,

We installed NowSMS 2011 Evaluation (intending to purchase ASAP), configured SMSCs and all works as expected.
But when another user (with same privileges - Admin) logs in and tries to open NowSMS management, it opens without any SMSC, with 60-day evaluation, although few days already passed. So the situation is that only the user that initially installed the system can work with it.

Any advise?
Regards,
Alex.

Hi Alex,

We were having some problems like this a few years ago, but I thought they had long since been resolved.

The underlying problem is a "rights" issue. We take care to create files in a shared user mode, but somehow that didn't happen in your case.

What you will find is that Windows is creating duplicate copies of NowSMS files (such as SMSGW.INI) under individual user directories.

Open a command prompt window and change to the root directory of your volume, and issue the command DIR SMSGW.INI /S

I suspect this will report multiple copies of the file.

In Windows 7, it is normal to see it in \ProgramData\NowSMS and \Users\All Users\NowSMS (these are aliases for the same directory).

However, if you see a NowSMS directory under any other user accounts, delete it.

I'm going to do some more investigation. Somehow rights must not have been applied correctly by the installer in your case.

If it is not too much trouble, I'd advise uninstalling, removing any extra \Users\xxx\NowSMS directories, and trying to re-install and reapply the configuration settings.

We're very sorry for the inconvenience, and are currently working to try to recreate and identify how this problem could occur.

Hi Alex,

We've done some more investigation.

Running the configuration program as an administrator should work around any problems. (The problem that is occurring is that the configuration program is locked out of updating configuration files. Windows decides to create separate configuration files for each user, and the actual running service will not be able to see them.)

We have not been able to recreate this problem with current versions of NowSMS, but we have seen it in the past, so we are familiar with the symptoms.

In the process of reviewing this issue again, we did notice that Windows Explorer displays a funny padlock by directories containing NowSMS configuration info. And we suspect that this may be related to the problem you are seeing, even though it does not seem to cause any problems in our testing. We suspect that when combined with some other specific security policy in Windows, this leads to the problem.

We are in the process of creating an update to fix this padlock problem and are optimistic that these changes will correct the problem that you are seeing.

On the subject of the trial period countdown, please note that if one user account on the system is used to install the trial, and then it is accessed by another account, the second account will not see an accurate count of the number of days left in the trial. The service is counting down the days, however the configuration program will not show the correct number of days left.

More follow-up ...

We still haven't had any luck recreating, but the padlocks displayed on the folders is a concern.

We've posted an update to fix that problem at http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms20120118.zip

After installing this update, make sure the user account having problems does not have a NowSMS folder (containing a duplicate SMSGW.INI) in its user folder.
