Yuan,

Ah ... now I understand.

The problem is that the Vodafone MMSC is only accessible from within the Vodafone network.

The 2-way MMS function won't work for messages received from most operator MMSCs, because the operators have placed their MMSCs behind firewalls, or keep them on their internal networks, and block all external access to the MMSC.

Why is this an issue?

Well, the MMS message comes into the phone as an SMS message in a binary format that denotes an MMS notification.

Inside of that MMS notification message is a URL for fetching the content of the MMS message.

So the gateway parses out that URL, and tries to fetch the MMS message content, but it cannot because the operator MMSC is blocked by a firewall.

You'd see more if you enabled our debug log, but in short, looking at the info in the SMS inbound log, the MMS URL we're trying to fetch is:

687474703A2F2F31302E3234302E3139382E362F736572766C6574732F6D6D733F6D6573736167652D69643D32363339363936

..or...

http://10.240.198.6/servlets/...

As you can see, a "10." address is a private IP address.

The only way to make this work ... would be to configure dial-up networking on the PC to make an IP connection over GPRS, and route 10.240.198.6 over that connection.

Unfortunately, that would require 2 phones, as NowSMS and dial-up networking cannot have an active connection on the same modem at the same time.

I wish I had a better answer for you here, but this is why I tend to recommend that people who want to receive MMS consider using an e-mail interface (phone subscriber sends to an e-mail address), unless they're in an environment where the MMSC has open access, or they are using NowSMS as the MMSC.

I have similar problems. I use the WAVECOM Fastrack modem and I'm using Vodafone SIM on the modem and another VODAfone SIM on a 7650 phone, when I tried to send MMS from 7650 to the NowSMS/MMS gateway, the gateway does not retrieve the MMS message and store it in the MMS-Inbox. Do I need to special configure the WAVECOM FASTRACK modem?

Thanks Bryce for pointing out the problem.

Now I try the approach using NowSMS as the MMSC.
I config 7650`s mms homepage as:
http://nowsms_host:nowsms_mmsc_port/myuser=mypassword

I can send message from 7650 to other phones.

But when I tred the 2-way process(sending MMS from 7650 to wavecom fastrack modem connected by nowsms)

I got some error message in SMSOUT*.log

Yuan,

The error messages on the outbound sending are not necessarily anything to be concerned about, unless they happen frequently.

In the case above, the MMS notification message was sent out as 2 concatenated SMS messages. The first message was sent out without incident. For the second message, it took 5 retries for the modem to send the message. On the first 4 attempts to send the message, the modem reported back the text "ERROR", which is why retries were attempted.

If this happens frequently, I'd like to see a debug log from the system. Manually edit SMSGW.INI, and under the [SMSGW] section header, add the statement Debug=Yes. Then restart the gateway service ... repeat the sending attempt.

Then e-mail SMSDEBUG.LOG to nowsms@now.co.uk so that we can take a look at it.

I'd love to help, but I need information.

An explanation of what you're trying to do. How you're trying to do it ... etc.

Ah ... I'm afraid you'd have to ask Vodafone.

Apparently Vodafone does not have MMS connectivity to your operator, therefore they have decided to convert the MMS message into a web page for you to view.

If you are outside of the UK, you might want to try entering your phone number in international format ... e.g., +CountryCodePhoneNumber (e.g., +442082868080).

Oops ... I just read the link that you sent, and they say to enter your phone number without the country code ... so I don't know how you would receive it if you were outside the UK.

Do you mean MMS?

This will get you into the right area, but the actual settings are operator specific:

The MMS configuration settings Press Menu key.
Scroll to Settings. Press Select.
Scroll to Internet settings. Press Select.
Scroll to MMS Settings. Press Select.

Jo,

I'm sorry. There seems to be a lot of questions about accessing messages sent through the Vodafone MMS service, and I think you're best off trying to ask Vodafone.

We've got nothing to do with it ... other than that people seem to ask questions about it here.

Sounds like someone else needs to contact Vodafone technical support.
