Hi,

I notice the documentation for using an Android device as a modem only lists compatibility with Android 2.2 thru 4.4.

Many devices now ship with 5.0 (Lollipop). Will the NowSMS modem app work with this newer version of Android?

Yes.

Absolutely. We have tested the NowSMS Modem app with Android Lollipop versions 5.0, 5.0.1, 5.1 and 5.1.1. Devices running any of those versions will work well.

Follow-up...

Just to avoid confusion, 2.3 (Gingerbread) is the oldest supported version. 2.2 (Froyo) is not supported.

At present, 2.3 to 5.1.1 is the supported version range.

Hi Des,

I am running Android v. 5.0.2 (Moto E 2nd generation 4G/LTE).

I attempted to install www.nowsms.com/apk but I'm unable to open the downloaded file.

Note: when I went to the URL (via chrome) it caused the screen to "flash" several times...I think it may have been performing multiple screen reloads (and hitting back several times appeared to browse through several copies of the same blank screen).

I didn't get any warning messages regarding the download.

Tapping on the download results in the message "can't open file".

Installation of apps from unknown sources is enabled.

Hi Mitch,

The download should be visible in the Downloads app...what is the size and exact error message when you try to load it?

A screen capture would be helpful. Press volume down and power at the same time to take a screen capture.

Hi Des,

Screenshot attached.

It took me about 8 billion attempts to capture this! (message transient for 2-3 seconds after tapping file name... and left handed user finger thumb challenge...)

Hi Mitch,

Please try again. I'm not seeing any problems, but we did just notice that the MIME type configured on our web site is not set correctly for an Android app download.

This may be causing issues depending on the version of Chrome or other web browser.

No change I'm afraid. Tried rebooting phone & downloading again to no avail.

Hi Mitch,

I found a way to recreate it. It appears that it was a MIME type issue, and changing that MIME type on our web site was the right solution.

However, after the MIME type was fixed on our web site, Chrome still had the old version cached, even though it was creating new copies in the download folder.

Clear your browser cache in Chrome (https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/2392709?hl=en) or download the APK from this alternate link: http://www.nowsms.com/apkdev

Thanks Des, I cleared the cache, and manually entered the URL again, it worked.
