Hello,

Does Now SMS support this data flow; if yes, how do I configure it?

1) Use a handset to send a SMS message. (what number, shortcode would it send the message to? how does it reach Now SMS?).
2) Now SMS receives this message and forwards it to a client bound to it via SMPP.
3) The SMPP client bound to Now SMS sends a response on outgoing connection; the response should then be delivered to the original sender.

Is this setup possible?

Thanks for help.

What is the optimal speed of sending messages with now.sms through a gsm modem ( how many per minute)?
What about receiving? Do you have to wait first to send all of the messages before you start receiving (downloading them from the modem) or is both ways simultaneously.

Thanx

Nitin,

1.) If you are using a handset as a GSM modem connected to NowSMS, then you would send the message to the number associated with that handset. (Perhaps I am not understanding your question, if so, please feel free to clarify.)

2.) Yes. Please note that if you are using GSM modems, then you would need one GSM modem for each SMPP client that needs to receive messages. This is because NowSMS essentially would be configured to route all messages received from a particular modem to a specific SMPP client account. (Note that this is a receiving requirement only, not a sending requirement. When sending, multiple SMPP clients can share a single GSM modem.)

3.) Yes, that is possible.

Hi Michael,

The message sending speed is highly variable.

The factors that are involved include:

1.) Whether or not the mobile operator supports SMS over GPRS.

2.) The speed at which the operator's SMSC will accept messages.

3.) Signal strength from the location at which your modem is installed.

4.) The sending speed of the GSM/GPRS modem.

These factors are roughly listed in the order in which they have an impact on performance.

I've seen configurations where you were lucky to get 5 to 6 messages per minute, and I've seen configurations where we could almost sustain 1 message per second over a single modem.

Basically, if the operator does not support SMS over GPRS, then you are going to be limited to somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 to 10 messages per minute. Signal strength, speed of the operator's network in accepting mesasges, and the modem that is used can all play a factor in where you fall within that range.

If SMS over GPRS is supported, you can generally see at least 30 messages per minute over a single modem. I have seen configurations where with a strong signal, 50 to 60 messages per minute was sustainable with either a Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 (PC Card) or Multitech GSM/ GPRS modem (external).

But a lot of this is really dependent on the operator, and what load they can support.

Regarding received messages, they will be processed simultaneously with sending. For best results, set "SMS Message Storage" = "Direct to Modem".

Do note if SMS over GPRS is not supported by your mobile operator, receiving SMS messages at the same time as sending can take up valuable bandwidth and slow down message sending considerably. (Quite frequently the modem will report errors sending, and we have to retry.) When SMS over GPRS is supported, receiving messages at the same time does tend to slow down message sending, but not as significantly.

Sorry that I've left this so open ended, but it really does vary significantly by network. So we encourage you to test things out in your environment.

Hello Bryce,

Thanks for responding. I am trying to configure for the 2-way sms. But not sure what command to configure when I receive the SMS. Here's the flow again:

Inbound:
Mobile1 --send msg-> M2 -forward-> SMPP connection

Outbound:
SMPP Connection -> nowSMS ?? -> Mobile 1??

I have added the 2 SMSC connections (1 for SMPP Transciever) and 1 for Modem. The SMPP Connection is succesful. However on 2-way SMS tab, what command should be entered to route the message to SMPP connection.

Similarly what config for outbound msg on SMPP.

Thanks for your help.
Thanks
Nitin

Is sending messages using 3G phones much quicker than GPRS. Also, do you know of any networks allowing the use of GPRS to send messages in Australia?

Many Thanks

For MMS yes. For SMS, not really ... the amount of data being transmitted is so small that the speed of the SMSC in accepting messages is a bigger factor.

Sorry, I don't know.

Nitin,

I think the following posting may help answer your question in more detail:
