I get the the following error message when trying to re-install the GSM modem. We've been running NowSMS for two months. Does the following error message indicate a problem with NowSMS or the modem?

Unable to Initialize TAPI: Error 800000048 from lineInitialize.

This error code suggests that there is something seriously wrong with the Windows modem driver.

Reboot.

Go into "Phone & Modem Options" in the Windows Control Panel. Are you able to select your modem, and go into "Diagnostics" to "Query Modem", or do you get an error somewhere in the process?

Hi Bryce,

We did not have a modem driver installed through Windows. We are using a Sony Ericsson GT48 GSM modem but do not have a specific driver for this device. Is the Ericsson T68 Cable Modem acceptable for this device? This is the only driver that is available through the Windows installation process.

Thanks
Garry

Hi Garry,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. If the device doesn't have a specific modem driver, I generally recommend using the Standard 33600 bps Modem driver in Windows. Just select it manually when you setup the modem.

The modem driver is only used for initialisation purposes, so don't worry about the speed of the driver.

For SMS only uses, you can also configure NowSMS to talk to the COM port directly without going through a modem driver. (But you have to use a modem driver if you want to do MMS over GPRS to an operator MMSC.)
