Hi, I need a gsm modem works in North America(Canada). I am new in this field and right now so confused about the model of the gsm modem I need. I've searched for different kinds of modems and seen some modems have usb ports, others working form serial ports. Which of these modems are faster? Are 3g modems the latest type of modems? Actually, I just need a modem to send and receive SMS and MMS messages working in 3g mode.

Hi, Any serial port models that you are likely older technology ... GPRS/EDGE. That's fine for SMS, but slow for MMS. For 3G models, you'll see terminology like HSPA and HSPA+. (If supported by the operator, HSPA+ is faster.) The latest technology is LTE, but I'd stay away from them for SMS/MMS right now, because those modems are designed for mobile internet access, and from what we've seen so far, the SMS and MMS functions are sometimes not implemented in LTE modems, or are very limited. Models constantly change. I don't know what you'd find in Canada right now. It does seem that we frequently hear about Novatel modems from Canadian customers, but we don't see those in other markets. One piece of advice ... I would recommend an unlocked modem. Typically when you buy a modem from an operator, they assume it is used for mobile internet access. As such, they assume the modem can't support MMS, and MMS won't be enabled for the SIM. Buying modem separately from the SIM helps avoid that type of problem. -- Des NowSMS Support

Absolutely not. It is one example in hundreds. Well, hundreds of models, tens of manufacturers. That is why it is difficult for me to recommend any one modem. Option, Huawei, Sierra Wireless, those are some of the top manufacturers that you will encounter. Most modems use a handful of different chipsets, so they are all pretty similar. Differences mostly have to do with different frequencies for different markets. -- Des NowSMS Support |
