Hi, Previously my company were utilizing the GSM modem pool connecting with NowSMS, the result is good. Now we are thinking to purchase some Mobile Broadband modems for the SMS sending due to lower cost and faster speed. The connection and sending is ok if I have <= 2 broadband modem in my server. However the USB ports become unstable while i slot 3 X mobile broadband modems. The server unable to recognize 4th broadband modem while i slot 4 X broadband modems. I tried on Windows XP and Fedora 13. Both return me same error result. I am wondering, what can I do to utilize multiple mobile broadband modem onto my server? Details of the modem: Huawei Mobile Broadband Model: E1750 Hear you soon and thank you!

Hi, The software for many USB modems is not designed to support multiple installed modems. They are designed to be used to provide mobile broadband/internet access. And the software designers did not think of things like modem pools. The Huawei software is particularly limiting. Mixing modems from different manufacturers can get around this limitation. But when you use USB, you also have to be aware that most USB modems do not have a separate power supply. They draw their power supply from the computer. So you need to make sure your computer has sufficient power for the USB ports, or the modems won't be recognised. Be aware that some computers have limits of total power across all USB ports or sets of USB ports. A powered USB hub can be another good idea. For a larger number of modems, if you have an existing modem pool that is working, that would seem to be a better solution. The pool is designed to work together, and 3G technology is not necessarily faster for sending SMS. -- Des NowSMS Support

Thank you Des. I have tested on 2 different powered USB hub and it is not working as well. Does it mean my USB hub is not powerful enough?

Hi, It could, but not necessarily. As I mentioned, the Huawei software is particularly limiting. The designers of that software did not think of uses like modem pools. So I would suspect the Huawei software just can't handle that many modems, and would suggest mixing modems from other manufacturers. To check the power issue ... most USB modems draw 500 mA, which is the max power draw per port supported in the USB version 2 standard. If you are using powered USB hubs (meaning hub has separate power supply), then the hub should be for for 500 mA per port. If you are using a passive USB hub, then power can be a problem for multiple modems. -- Des NowSMS Support
