Hi, I want to run NowSMS in a VM environment. But when I try, NowSMS cannot find the modem. I can sort of get it working by entering the IP address of the modem, but the configuration is one way. NowSMS can send messages, but it does not receive messages, even though the Android modem app shows that messages are being received. Is NowSMS able to run in a VM environment? -scotty | |||

Hi Scotty, Yes, NowSMS can be run in a Windows environment that is hosted under a VM manager. The problem that you are experiencing is most likely a TCP/IP configuration issue, more specifically a NAT (network address translation) issue. The terminology varies a little between VM environments, but in the network settings for the VM, there is usually a setting for whether the network is shared or bridged. For best results, you want to use a bridged network configuration. Shared network means that Windows gets what I would call a fake IP address. It is a private IP address that only allows direct communication with other VMs on the same host. The VM manager provides a NAT service that allows the VM to make connections out to the real network, but the VM cannot receive any connections. This is why you cannot receive SMS messages, and it is why the VM cannot see the Android device. Bridged network means that the VM gets its own IP address on the main network. This way it can make and receive connections with other devices on the same network. -- Des NowSMS Support |
