Still struggling. I have a modem (T68) connected to NowSMS and trying to receive an MMS. Receive SMS and MMS are both checked. My modem (T68) receives an MMS, but it doesnt end up in MMS-IN folder. It stays in the phone. Tried to configure MMS settings. I have MMS URL, do I need "Use specific Network Connection" checked? If I check it, the listbox with "Network Connection" is always empty and doesnt let me save settings. So how do I configure my NowSMS to receive MMS. Right now my modem (T68) receives it.

By T68, you mean the (Sony)Ericsson T68 phone, right?

Sorry, but you cannot receive MMS messages using NowSMS when you are using a phone as the GSM modem.

The MMS client on the mobile phone always intercepts the MMS notification message, and it never gets forwarded over the modem interface.

You need to use a dedicated GSM modem device in order to receive MMS messages. Something like the Siemens MC35 Terminal (external modem device) or Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 (PC Card device).

Ok thanks Bryce. So T68 is not a good modem if I want to receive an MMS. But now what if anyone who sends MMSs from his mobile phone use my NowSMS as MMSC and I want to receive and disassemble those MMS messages. Should I setup the very same NowSMS to send MMSs to itself so that they end up in MMS-IN folder? So I setup the same NowSMS to connect to itself say via MM7, so all received MMS from mobile devices will be forwarded to ... the same NowSMS to be disassembled in MMS-IN. In this case MMS will never actually arrive to teh receipient mobile phone (I suppose).

Are your users only going to be sending MMS messages to the server itself? (No sending MMS messages to other phones.)

Someone else recently was setting up a similar type of environment. In their case, they were using Nokia observation cameras sending in messages at regular intervals.

I suggested that rather than having the devices connect in as MMSC User accounts, they connect in as VASP accounts instead. With a VASP account, there are additional options for how to route the inbound messages ... you can dump them directly to the MMS-IN directory without the MMSC attempting to route them. Or you could post them to an app directly using MM7.

It sounds like this might be a solution for your requirements, see:

Users will only send MMS to the server yes. Real receipient should never receive them.

As a first approach I tried to create a VASP account to receive MM7 communication and then change MMS URL on the mobile phone to be server/mm7/username=password but it doesnt work. Mobile phone fails to communicate with this MMS URL.

As another approach I tried to create VASP account to receive MM7 communication and MMS Routing. MMS Routing I indicated desired protocol (MM7) and Server address (server/mm7/) all other fields are blank/unchecked. I was hoping to receive MMS with traditional MMS URL on the mobile phone (server/user=password), then NowSMS routes this MMS to ..... itself, VASP account accepts MM7 communication and dumps MMS into MMS-IN folder. Well doesnt work either :-( . NowSMS does create a new folder in MMSCDATA\... to store MMS messages posted by mobile phone, but immediately deletes MMS from there. From that moment I have no message anywhere. Am I doing anything wrong?

Oh yes and I forgot to mention that I also tried to configure MMS URL on the handset as server/mm1/user=password and server/mm4/user=password to make them seen as VASP account by NowSMS. Each time MMS sending failed on the handset e.g. connecting to MMS URL was not possible. I used Nokia 3300 phone.

A mobile phone talks the "mm1" protocol, so the URL format would be:

server.name:port/mm1/username=password

In this case, the "username" and "password" correspond to an account defined in the "MMSC VASP" list.

If that is not working, then are you able to connect from the phone using the standard server.name:port/username=password URL format ("username" and "password" defined in the "MMSC Users" list).

Oh yes mm1 did the trick, thanks.

oops just noticed one strange thing. when receiving an MMS in MMS-In folder, message header *.hdr doesnt seem to contain any info on where the file was sent from (e.g. originator's phone number) instead it has "From: Insert-address-token" statement. Is there anyway that I can force NowSMS to place sender's phone in there or trace sender's phone by any other means?

That is a bug.

When you define an MMSC VASP, and configure NowSMS to receive any messages submitted by that VASP by writing files to the MMS-IN directory, NowSMS is not performing any pre-processing against the message.

MM1 clients generally do not include a sender address (just the "insert-address-token" parameter).

The v5.50 release version will include a fix for this problem, and apply the "VASP Sender Address" parameter defined for the VASP so that this address appears as the "From:" address when the message file is written to the "MMS-IN" directory.

If you need a quick solution to this problem, I can send you an interim update. Send an e-mail to nowsms@now.co.uk and reference this problem.

Apologies for taking so long to get back to you on this!

Hi,

I just tried your settings here, and I was able to send a message to your system without any errors.

I'm puzzled by the "invalid contact details" error, as there is no error code in MMS that would seem to correspond to this error message.

I'm wondering if perhaps that error might be being generated by the phone itself. Perhaps the phone is performing an edit check on the phone number (or e-mail address) that you are attempting to send the message to, and it doesn't think it is valid.

Even if you have the VASP configured to route all received messages to a particular destination, you do need to supply a recipient address in the message.

When I posted a message to your server a few minutes ago, I sent it to a phone number of all 9's.

No problem.

I used a Nokia 6820 for my test. (I like to use it for this type of test, because it has a keyboard which makes it easy to type in alternate settings.)

I changed the "homepage" in an existing connection profile to be the URL for your MMSC. And then I sent a message to "99999999999" (not sure exactly how many 9's I used, I just wanted it to be an invalid phone number).

I'll go ahead and do it on a Nokia 6600 as well, and describe what steps I take ...

I go into "Messaging", press "Options", select "Settings", select "Multimedia Message". From "Access Point in use" field, press "Options", select "Change". Highlight an existing access point definition that I know is working, press "Options", select "New Access Point"/"Use existing settings". Select my working access point definition. I then change the "Home Page" to the URL for your MMSC. After making the change, I back out to the "Default Access Point" menu, and select my new access point. I then press "Back" several times until returned to the main menu.

Now I go to send a message.

It requires that I put something in the "To" field before I can send a message. If I just put in a ".", then I get the "Invalid contact details" error message that you described. (This comes from an edit check in the phone itself.) So I just put a "1" in the to field, and then send the message.

And the message gets sent to your server.

So it looks like I was correct, on the Nokia 6600, it performs an edit check, and you get "Invalid contact details" if you enter something that is not a valid phone number or e-mail address in the "To" field.

It appears that now you have moved on to a different setup issue.

You may need to change both the GPRS APN (Access Point Name) and proxy server setup. (If you use an APN that provides direct internet access then the 6600 will work without a proxy server defined.)

The answer to the question depends on your mobile operator setup.

The MMS settings for some operators only allow you to connect to the operator's MMSC.

Verify that you can actually use the browser on your phone to connect to an external site such as http://wap.oa.yahoo.com.

Then configure the MMS client on the mobile phone to use an access point definition that you copy from the one being used for the browser. For the MMS copy of the profile, you will apply the MMSC address as the "home page".

If you don't have an access point defined in your phone, then your phone does not have any configuration settings to allow it to connect to any sites via the browser.

What this error message is saying is that it is pointless to define any bookmarks because you cannot connect to them until you define an access point.

Go to http://www.nokia.com/phonesettings, and that service might be able to help you configure the settings on your phone so that you have an access point defined.
