Some help!

1) is it better to use rtsp readaudio format or 3gpp for simple video streaming service?

2) besides nokia 6600 does all other series 60 phones like 3650, 3660, 7650, 7610, n-gage and n-gage QD, and SEricsson P800, P900 also support rtsp streaming?

3) What tools are there to convert from avi or mpg or others common format to rm/3gpp?

Thank U.

ad 1) 3gpp is supported by much more phones than real, but real is easier to produce (and gives for the moment IMHO a slightly better quality for bandwidth)

we go with 3gpp for mobile phones

ad 2) ASFAIK yes, there is a document on forum nokia listing all the video capabilities of all nokia phones. You can also install the Helix player on all series60 phones. P800 ancd P900 do for the moment only 3gpp, no real. I habe however a lot of problems with rtsp to 3gpp on our P800s.

ad 3) For Real RealProducer, for 3gpp Quicktime Pro (because we stream 3gpp via Darwin Streaming Server)

to be slightly more on-topic: You can include 3gpp content in MMS and for phones capable of SMIL you can include rtsp links in SMIL in MMS.
NowSMS: Could you include a feature to be able to submit via a VASP account more than one version of a MMS and have the version selected according to the capabilities of the phone? We have esp. problems with SMIL support vs. no SMIL support. Note that OMA is talking about this for MMS v1.3.

Mail me if you are interested in more details.

Hi Wolfgang,

The trick here is that they're "talking about it".

It's a little difficult to do anything until a spec is nailed down.

Most of the discussions that I have seen in this area have been more SMIL related than anything else. Basically, SMIL 2.0 defines the "switch" element, and "systemRequired" attribute. The idea is that different SMIL is triggered based upon whether or not particular SMIL modules are supported.

But anything that gets implemented in this area is going to require support in mobile phones, and its not possible to go back and re-engineer phones that are already on the market.

So I don't think a pure SMIL approach is going to work. Hopefully the OMA direction is toward better defining the "MM Content Classes" in the conformance specs. The idea being that different content options could be posted for devices that support different "MM Content Classes". And the MMSC could deliver the content that is appropriate for the class of the device.

The big question is how to define this standard way of submitting a message with different content for different device classes.

We're interested in any suggestions that you might have in this area. Any little things that we can do ... in lieu of a more formal standard. But if it looks like this is going to be standardised, this is some functionality that we would jump on, as it is a big issue.

Bryce: Differentiating based on the Content Classes would be good but IMHO not enough, I would like to see full access to the phone profile.
As a high-end solution I would suggest using a script-language in the body part of a MMS (like using JSP/JSTL for WAP pages). The script should have access to the profile. A noe-so-hard-to-implement step in this direction could be the redirection of the MMS download request from the phone to a external server, who is then responsible for providing all adaption, etc. When submitting the MMS for delivery one could provide a URL instead of the body of the message.

I found an interesting 3GPP/MPEG4 developer tool at www.businesms.com. It creates streamable 3GPP video also, and has some cool editing functions. They told me it is compatible with nowsms but I haven't tried it out yet.

Anyone know when MMS v1.3 will be implemented by anyone?
