Have installed everything. Can Send SMS. Can (try) and send MMS (hasn't worked yet). Can't receive MMS... the phone (nokia 6210) shows briefly 1 received message. But then nothing. can't retrieve the MMS... (and wouldn't know where to retrieve)

Benjamin,

Are you using the phone (6210) as a GSM modem?

I would not expect to be able to use NowSMS to receive an MMS message in a configuration where a mobile phone is used as the GSM modem. (This is because the MMS notification comes in to the phone over SMS ... however because this message is encapsulated in a WAP push, the phone typically processes the WAP push message without presenting it to NowSMS over the modem interface.) You generally need a dedicated GSM modem device to be able to receive MMS.

All this said, if you are seeing something on the phone indicating that you received 1 message, but then the message disappears, then here is what I think is occurring:

The SIM in the phone is not enabled for MMS messaging by the mobile operator. So when an MMS message is sent to that phone number, the operator instead sends an SMS message to the phone to tell the user that they can logon to a web site to view the content of the MMS message. NowSMS *cannot* retrieve MMS messages that are received in this fashion as there is no standard for these external MMS web sites. The account associated with the SIM needs to be provisioned for MMS access.

Anyway ... I suspect NowSMS is configured to receive SMS messages, so the message that was received here would either get routed to a "2-way" command (if any are defined), or deposited in the "SMS-IN" directory.

I'm making some educated guesses here on what is occurring in your configuration, so I may have made some wrong assumptions. Please feel free to reply back with clarification if necessary.

Another helpful hint ... when setting up these types of connections, it can be helpful to run the gateway in debug mode in order to better understand what is occurring. To enable debug mode, manually edit SMSGW.INI, and add Debug=Yes under the [SMSGW] section header of the file. Then restart the service. As it runs, the gateway will produce an SMSDEBUG.LOG, and that will provide some clues as to what is occurring on the gateway.

Thnx 4 the explaination.
What I've done is put a Vodafone Live sim-card (with data only option since this is a test card) into the Nokia 6210. That's connected to my PC - which is connected to an office LAN (behind firewall).

The system indeeds receives a notification, but can't seem to find this anywhere in NowSMS program dir's. I might have wrongfully set some parameters in the program, but I left everything pretty standard.

Sending an MMS also doesn't work.

Do you guy's also provide phone-support? That might be easier to solve the problem quickly.

Thnx,

Benjamin

Benjamin,

We do rather limited phone support ... usually that focuses more on the basics. A lot of times, we need more information on your configuration, so we ask you to activate the debug mode, and send us the SMSDEBUG.LOG. That gives us a clearer picture of what is happening on your system.

I would not expect you to be able to receive an MMS message using a Nokia 6210 as your modem.

Sending would not be a problem. I would suggest that you confirm that you can send/receive SMS messages before you jump into MMS. If you follow the steps in the Quick Start Guide, that's usually the best path.

When it comes to sending MMS messages, note that there are two ways that this can be done through our software, particularly in the v5.0 beta release, which I assume that you're using because you're posting here.

You can either perform direct MMS delivery, where our gateway acts as the MMSC. Or you can send the message to an operator MMSC over GPRS. (I don't recall the Nokia 6210 supporting GPRS, so the latter might not be an option for you as long as you're using that phone as the modem.)

When the gateway performs direct MMS delivery, this can effectively be blocked by the MMS settings of many operators. There's a good discussion of these options and issues at this thread:

Back to your questions. I'd suggest going through that Quick Start Guide that I referenced. And if you continue to have problems, put the gateway into debug mode, and e-mail the SMSDEBUG.LOG to nowsms@now.co.uk, along with an explanation of what you were trying to do, and we'll try to make some sense of it.
