Greetings,

We are having an issue with random phones from different carriers when our customers receive an MMS. For example, when certain Boost Mobile phones send an MMS to one of our subscribers, our customer will get the MMS message, but in the message it says "Image attachments deleted from the message to adapt to your device capabilites". This happens when the Boost customer sends an MMS to any of our subscribers with MMS. I have attached a debug log from our MMSC of a test MMS from a Boost phone to one of my test phones (9206030981, could you please take a look and see what might be happening? Also, we are running your most current NowSMS software release 03.21.2011

Thank you,
Andy

Hi Andy,

Unfortunately, that text is not inserted by NowSMS. (I say unfortunately, because if it was, we would have some control over it.)

It would have to be inserted into the message before it arrives on NowSMS.

I'm assuming that this message arrives on your NowSMS system via MM4. The MM4 transaction details should also be in the MMSCDEBUG.LOG, and I would be curious to see that. However, I expect we are going to see this "Image attachments deleted from the message to adapt to your device capabilites" text present in the data that is received via MM4.

It doesn't make sense why the other MMSC would strip the image data before transmitting it to your system. There is no way that the other MMSC could know anything about device capabilities on your system as that is never shared via MM4.

Unfortunately, other than contacting Boost, I don't know what else to suggest. It would be interesting if that Boost subscriber has problems sending the same image to a subscriber on yet another different operator.

Let's confirm that this text about images being deleted is present in the message that is received from MM4 first.

Also, I assume that you are receiving this via an MMS interconnect provider. It would be better to go to them first before going to Boost. It is possible that the interconnect provider might have a size limit defined on your connection which needs to be increased.

I'd suggest asking them to trace the message to try to determine if the image is removed by the Boost MMSC before it gets to their interconnect, or if it is being removed by the interconnect.

Hi Des,

Thanks for the response. I was really hoping that message was from the MMSC. We are using an MMS interconnect provider which I will have to contact and have them investigate this issue. The strange thing is that this seems to only be happening with certain phones. We are also experiencing this with an iPhone 4 on AT&T. We have never had an issue like this previously so it just seems a little strange. Anyway, I will check with our MMS intercarrier provider, thank you for your help.

Hi Andy,

In the case of the iPhone 4, it most likely is a case of a size restriction that is configured somewhere along the path. (It probably is the same for the Boost phone, but I don't know as much about it.)

Early MMS clients considered a 300KB MMS message to be extremely large. (Many of the early MMS clients in Nokia phones had a 30KB limit.)

The iPhone 4 was one of the first devices to push its limit to 2MB. (Which still is not very large when you think about high quality images.)

Interconnect providers typically have maximum MMS message size limits configured for each of their partners.

They might have your system configured for some ridiculously low limit based upon limitations of early MMS devices. And it is likely that their system is removing the image and inserting this text. (It is also possible that the source operator has a size limit defined for the interconnect provider that they use to reach you.)

If your interconnect provider needs to have a size limit defined for your connection, have them use a larger value, like 10MB, or whatever they will allow.
