We have repeatedly encounter this problem with the following message:- mmscomp.exe has encountered a problem and needed to close From the window's Event viewer, we see that it is an issue with the application. "Reporting queued error: faulting application mmscomp.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module mmscomp.exe, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00003bb3." We are using NowSMS 2010.05.24. Kindly take a look at this. Thank you.

Are there any stray files left behind in the NowSMS directory structure? Specifically the TEMP and/or MMSCIN\DECODE directories? Files with an extension of .HDR or .MMS in these directories? If so, I would like to see them to troubleshoot this further. -- Des NowSMS Support

There is a lot of .HDR files, a total of 226 files (3 files last modified on May 1st) and none for .MMS found in the DECODE directory. As for the TEMP directory, there is only 1 HDR file with last file modified on 2007.

Please forward me the content of the MMSCIN\DECODE directory (and subdirectories) so that we can study it to see what the problem is. E-mail to nowsms@nowsms.com with Attention: Des in the subject line. -- Des NowSMS Support

Hi Adi, Those files were interesting, but unfortunately they didn't provide me the clue I was looking for. They did point out a problem where if an image filename includes a "?" character, the MMSC will drop the image. We will fix this bug in a future update ... however, this bug would not cause the problem you are seeing. However, there is one problem fixed in a more recent MMSC release that may be related to the problem you are experiencing. Please update to the following release (2010.11.26): http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms20101126.zip -- Des NowSMS Support

We did an upgrade to the latest 2010.11.04, and did a reboot but the issue still occurs. We would like to know what does mmscomp.exe does...as I believe it relaunch after it fail so mms testing is all successful. Do you think going to 2010.11.26 will do any help? Also looking at this similar error on other application pointed it to registry, is there anything I could check there? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914048

Hi Adi, mmscomp.exe has several different purposes, but in your configuration, the failure cases are most likely related to conversions of inbound MM4 messages. Before we troubleshoot this further, let me have you apply an updated version of MMSCOMP.EXE. Use the version in this ZIP file to replace the one in the NowSMS program directory. http://www.nowsms.com/download/mmscomp20110506.zip If the problem persists, we will develop a strategy for troubleshooting further. -- Des NowSMS Support

Thank you Des for new mmscomp.exe file. I have replaced and restarted the nowsms service. Unfortunately the same event is still appearing at the event viewer. Would like to know how can we move forward.

Hi Adi, Let's take a fresh look at this MMSCIN\DECODE directory that I referenced earlier in this thread. Delete all files in that directory. The next time this event occurs, note the date/time of any events, and send all of the files in the MMSCIN\DECODE directory. E-mail to nowsms@nowsms.com with Attention: Des in the subject line. This should tell us what we need to know about what is triggering the problem. -- Des NowSMS Support

Hi Des, Thanks for the advise. I did some removal and I did not see the error for the past few days. Can I know what are those file for?
Des - NowSMS Support Board Administrator Username: Desosms Post Number: 3385 Registered: 08-2008 |
Hi Adi, They are temporary files that are primarily created when processing MM4 and/or SMTP messages and converting them to MM1 format for delivery. I am suspicious that the problems you are experiencing is related to this process, and that we will see temporary files left behind if this error occurs. -- Des NowSMS Support

Hi Des, Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the issue is still occurring although less frequently but still occuring. It happens when the folder is empty as well. Looking forward for your feedback.

Hi Adi, If possible, note the date/time of any events. Then send all of the files in the MMSCIN\DECODE directory. E-mail to nowsms@nowsms.com with Attention: Des in the subject line. This should tell us what we need to know about what is triggering the problem. -- Des NowSMS Support

Hi Des, I have sent a print screen of the error via email and the directory MMSCIN\DECODE is currently empty.

Hi Adi, We're puzzled over how to explain this. Are there any other odd messages in the system logs? Can you update to 2011.07.05? (The trial download link at http://www.nowsms.com/download-free-trial can be used to update an installed system.) Are there any .HDR files in the MMSCDATA\TEMP directory? -bn
Adi Wong New member Username: Adiwong Post Number: 15 Registered: 05-2011 |
Hi Bryce, Yes, there 35 .HDR inside MMSCDATA\TEMP directory. HDR files are there since March 2009 until July 2011. What can I do with them?
Bryce Norwood - NowSMS Support Board Administrator Username: Bryce Post Number: 8006 Registered: 10-2002 |
Hi Adi, Hmm ... if the most recent file was from July 2011, it would not be related to any recent problem. However, perhaps they would still provide a clue. Please ZIP or RAR the full content of that MMSCDATA\TEMP directory (and subdirectories), and e-mail to nowsms@nowsms.com with a subject line of Attention: Bryce -bn

Hi Adi, That is a strange one. Is there a file named "en mode"? Can you try deleting it? Any files in this MMSCDATA\TEMP directory can be deleted without causing any harm ... I am just curious to see them in case it provides clues about the issue. In fact, you could remove this directory and let the system recreate it. If you open a command prompt window, make the MMSCDATA directory your current directory. Then rename the directory to a different directory. For example: (In my case this directory was empty, but you would have files in it already.)

Hi Des I have moved the files. We will monitor this for a while. |
