Hello

At this time we use other product for receive MMS, but in the last day have problem to receive MMS

SO we installed NowSMS free trial, for testing function.

But, not work with italian Tim MMS

After installation we have follow instruction, setting modem and mms settings but when click "Test connection" (under MMS settings) get "Connection Failed - RAS Error 718"

We have also advise that mms.tim.it seems now "unknown host" if try to ping it

Is this page updated ?

Hi Simon,

We have recently updated our settings page (and the related MMSOP.INI configuration file used by NowSMS). We have yet to updated product downloads to include the new MMSOP.INI, so you can either download the updated file from that settings page and use it to replace your MMSOP.INI file, or manually enter the settings.

Note that if you manually enter the settings, any WAP Gateway/MMS Proxy settings that include a port address (":" character) need to be prefaced with http:// ... for example, with TIM use a WAP Gateway Address setting of http://213.230.130.89:80 in current versions of NowSMS. (What we call the WAP Gateway address is called the MMS Proxy Address in Android phones.)

All that said, the only change we made for the TIM settings in the latest review is to use a newer WAP2/HTTP gateway/proxy for MMS instead of the older WAP1/WSP gateway.

RAS Error 718 indicates an error connecting to the APN, so we're not getting as far as the gateway/proxy.

Usually this error indicates an wrong APN or username/password, or low signal strength for the modem.

I suppose it could also happen if the SIM card in the modem is not provisioned for MMS. If you buy a modem with a SIM card, many operators provision the SIM for data services only but do not enable MMS because they believe it is not possible with a modem.

So as a first step I'd recommend moving the SIM from the modem to a phone and verify that it can send/receive MMS using the phone. After you've validated that the SIM is ok for MMS in the phone, move it back to the modem.

In NowSMS, enable the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG (Serial # page) and try the MMS connection attempt. I'd like to see the resulting MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG to see if that provides any clues. (LOG file usually located in ProgramData\NowSMS instead of Program Files\NowSMS)

Hi Simon,

Network Connection must be the modem. Other settings are for advanced configuration needs and would not be expected to work (you can only connect to the operator MMSC using a data connection initiated over a modem).

Look for MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG in ProgramData\NowSMS. On many systems the ProgramData directory is hidden, which may make it more difficult to find. (You will also find a file named SMSGW.INI in that directory.)

Hi Simon,

OK ... that log looks normal, except for the error.

One thing I would suggest is removing the "Modem standard 56000 bps" driver and use "Standard 33600 bps Modem" instead. This would be done in the Modems area of the Windows Control Panel ... remove the old driver, then add the modem again using this other driver.

Don't worry about the speed in the driver name ... this won't slow the modem down. These drivers were originally created for landline dial-up modems and the 56K driver sends extra AT commands related to error correction which have no applicability to a wireless data modem. The 33600 driver is more generic.

If the problem persists with the different modem driver, then here are the next steps...

Enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG ... at startup NowSMS sends some commands to collect info that may be useful for troubleshooting.

In particular I'm looking for the responses to AT+COPS? and AT+CSQ

AT+COPS? is going to report info about which network the modem is connected to, and AT+CSQ is going to report signal strength.

I've posted some notes on AT+CSQ here: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/60289.html

The first number in the response is the important one, the one that reports signal strength ... you'll note in that thread that I experienced 50% failure at 10-12 and the customer was failing 100% at 8-10. Values in the 20's to low 30's are very good ... upper teens are stable. 14 and lower are generally problematic values.

Assuming your signal strength looks good, the next thing to look at would be the Windows modem log, as NowSMS uses Windows to handle the modem's data connection.

Go into the Windows Control Panel and locate the Modems area. Select Properties for the modem and on the Diagnostics page, enable the "Append to Log" setting if it is not already enabled.

Go back to NowSMS and try to test the MMS connection again.

Now go back to view the Windows modem log. You should see a log entry that says:

Send: ATDT*##***##<cr>

(Or something close to that.)

What happens next in the modem log?
