Hello NowSMS, we are requesting your support our MMS clients are informing us that they can't connect to our MMS server sometimes in port 25 (SMTP) and we are seeing that service is downloading and uploading, could you confirm if this behavior is normal. The version of the mms server is Now SMS/MMS 206 edition.

This is an example of the behavior

piroxo:/home/dmena # telnet 172.26.5.132 25
Trying 172.26.5.132...
telnet: connect to address 172.26.5.132: Connection refused
piroxo:/home/dmena # telnet 172.26.5.132 25
Trying 172.26.5.132...
Connected to 172.26.5.132.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 SMTP Ready
Connection closed by foreign host.

Thanks for your feedback and let us know if you need more information.

Hi,

What version of NowSMS are you running? Was 206 supposed to be 2006?

That version would be 7 years old, and there have been numerous updates to the product during that time.

When you say that the service is downloading and uploading, I assume you mean that the service is restarting. This would be evidenced by regular entries in the Windows Event Log referencing the service being started.

If that is the case, it definitely sounds like the MMSC service is crashing.

If this is happening very regularly, say repeated every several minutes, then most of the known problems in older versions of NowSMS have been related to problems processing corrupt e-mail messages.

Inbound e-mail messages are queued in an MMSCIN directory beneath the NowSMS directory structure. I would recommend stopping the MMS service and removing all files from the MMSCIN directory before restarting the service. (I'd suggest backing up those files to another location so they could be selectively re-released to the MMSCIN directory for processing.)

If removing the files from the MMSCIN directory does not resolve the problem, then I need to better understand your configuration ... the correct version number ... and an overview of your configuration. (Operating primarily as an MMSC? How are users submitting typically submitting messages? What outbound MMSC routing is defined? What inbound MMSC VASPs are defined?)

A corrupt user database could also cause problems. Newer versions of NowSMS check and repair database issues automatically at startup. But for older versions, a procedure can be found here: http://www.nowsms.com/repairing-a-corrupt-mmsc-user-database ... However, if you are running NowSMS 2006, this article would not apply, because I think the MMSCUSERS.DB format was introduced in 2007.

After resolving the immediate issue, I would strongly recommend an upgrade. The 2013 version will not recognise a 2006 license, so you would need to purchase an update. I would strongly suggest that you contact our sales department. Phone number and other contact details can be found at: http://www.nowsms.com/contact.

Hi,

I understand from an email forwarded to me by one of my colleagues that you are still encountering problems.

The repeated event log messages are indicative of the problem I suspected.

Have you followed the advice from this message and removed all messages from the MMSCIN directory?

If that does not resolve the issue, try the same procedure with the MMSCOUT directory.
