Hi Des Reference to this thread http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/71237.html you had mentioned this "we have been doing work to increase the functionality of the convert template to make it more functional for modern browsers (especially with regard to video). " Now it does indeed display the link the video with this changed templates. But the issue is that the MMS client wont compress the video size like it does for the images. And when you try to capture a video only max 4 second video is attached as an MMS. So basically a user wont be sending a 4 second video clip via an MMS. Any way out on this? I mean to increase the video lenght or compress the video size? Kindly let me know Thanks Sam

Hi Sam, Unfortunately that part is up to the client. At least I can't think of anything that would be limiting on the MMSC end. -- Des NowSMS Support

Hi Des Your reply is highly appreciated. Am yet to see any handset with MMS 1.3 which has allowed for a maximum size of 600KB In my opinion if the size is not increased of sending videos MMS client is simply not usable for videos. Sam

Hi Sam, I agree that the size profiles are quite limiting. I believe the default iPhone MMS profile is 1MB, which is bigger but still limiting. There is also a 2MB version of the iPhone MMS profile that we have observed in use. Yet still, while larger, those file sizes are quite constraining for video. I'd argue that the common 300KB and 600KB are even insufficient for pictures, let alone video. When you've got an 8 megapixel camera and a retina or HD display, how much does the picture need to be degraded to be sent via MMS? (I've frequently asked friends of mine to resend pictures via email when I've wanted to save a copy of the picture, because the version received via MMS was too degraded for anything other than small screen display.) In fact, I've also noticed in my own extended family a tendency to only share videos when it is known that both sender and receiver an iPhone, a sort-of iPhone snobbery, because there have been too many instances of videos not properly going across when sending between different devices. (In the iPhone to iPhone case, the videos get transferred via the proprietary iMessage service which seems to have a limit higher than 1MB or 2MB, but I can't say I've taken the time to analyse this ... just a cursory analysis observing extended family members.) I digress ... but I guess what I'm saying is that I agree with you. Typical MMS client size limitations, imposed by the client end, are too limiting for video sharing. These limitations result in a poor user experience, and to some extent discourage users from making use of carrier provided MMS services, opening the door for OTT services. -- Des P.S. - I guess this is more of my personal opinion, as opposed to official support, so I'll add this disclaimer.

Hi Des Right on...MMS would get buried in couple of years with that size limitations..speically with IM apps around for smart phones...MMS was/could have been a great upgrade for SMS... Your inputs are highly appreciated. Regards Sam |
