Hi Bryce,

I'm trying to connect to the Orange mmsc via mm1 to deliver mms content. I was under the impression that I could use a Nokia 7110 as a gsm modem and connect to orange using its data capabilities. I've got the Now MMSC to use the 7110 to send sms notifications via the handset, but I get an error when setting up the mmsc routing to use the modem. When I click the 'test connection' button, I get a warning that the modem does not respond to gprs commands. Is this the case? Do I need to use a gprs handset/modem to access an mmsc or is there a gsm workaround I could try?

Cheers,
Nick

Nick,

The Nokia 7110 is a fine GSM modem, but most operators require GPRS for connections to their MMSC. (Technically, it is not a requirement of MMS, but it is an implementation decision.)

With O2 or Vodafone, since they use the same WAP gateway for MMS and WAP, you might be able to use their WAP dial-up settings to connect to their MMSC. But Orange uses a different WAP gateway for MMS vs. WAP ... and it uses different GPRS APNs to connect to each of these gateways. Therefore, I would suspect that their WAP dial-up settings would not work for MMS connections.

If you wanted to try ... you need to configure a dial-up networking profile in Windows that connects to the appropriate dial-up settings.

When you configure the MMS routing in NowSMS, in the "Network Connection" parameter, you need to specify the dial-up networking profile that you created (prefixed with "Dial-up:"), instead of selecting a "Modem" directly.

Also, specify the appropriate modem in the "Modem Used" field. (This tells NowSMS that it needs to release the modem from SMS access before NowSMS creates any dial-up networking sessions for the MMS access.)

Note that the "Test Connection" button does not test that you have connectivity all the way to the operator MMSC. It only tests that you have connectivity as far as the WAP gateway. So you would need to try to send a message through the connection to determine whether or not this was actually working.

Bottom-line, I would suggest a GSM/GPRS device, as then you won't have to spend as much time experimenting.
