hello.

i have a big problem.

When i try to send the € charactere in a sms message, it wount 2 chars in the web interface but i don't recive the € char on my phone.
also when i type \ it sends / on the sms.

I have the same problem when i choose 8859-1 encoding.

What can i do for that ?

And is there a way to send messages sith î or ô or € or / that have 160 charcateres using iso 8859-1 encoding (whitout using unicode) ?

when i send sms with my french operator i can have these caractere on a 160 char sms.... how do they do that ?

Thank you very much for your help.

i have read a few very interesting messages from bryce in this board.

But i don't understund.

I just sent a sms with this message from a french mobile phone to another :

test d'accent éàéîûôéçàôûîôôôöüûéàëêôû test d'accents ûîôîôêëöëöîöïêë¨àà䀀àà@@ààêôîïöëüû fin de test d'accent.

The other mobile phone recived this sms :
test d'accent éàéiuoéÇàouioooöüuéàeeou test d'accents uioioeeöeöiöiee?ààä??àà@@ààeoiiöeüu fin de test d'accent.

As i read here, some of these chars must uses unicode to be send. But this sms was more than 70 char anf was counted for ONE sms by my operator.

So, how do they do that ?
Do you know , if i want to do the same thing in a normal sms what i must put in the data_coding field of my smpp submit_sm ? And if i want to do the same sms like them (not unicode) for a flash sms, what must i put in the data_coding field ?

And most of all, is it possible to do that with nowsms (using the &DCS= in the sending url for example) or do i have to make my own program for that ?

Thank you for your help and i am really sorry for my english that is so bad.

Hi Michel,

So many questions ... where to start?

Let's start with this:

Ok. Here you can see that the operator decided to strip your accents on characters that were not part of the GSM character set (or the SMS software in the phone decided to do this).

If you wanted to submit the same thing through NowSMS, you would have to strip the accents yourself, as we do not. (We will go the Unicode route to preserve the originally entered character.)

This could be an issue with your service provider.

Regarding the Euro ... when it sent over the air, it is represented as 2 characters within a 160 character SMS. 0x1B 0x65

Similarly, the backslash is 0x1B 0x2F.

It looks like NowSMS is using that encoding in your SMPPDEBUG.LOG above.

You could try changing the character set for the SMPP connection (under "Advanced Settings" when you select "Properties" of the SMPP connection in NowSMS) to use iso-8859-1 instead, as perhaps that is what your provider expects.

But we are submitting the actual GSM character codes that need to go out over the air.

€ and \ (or /) should be fine (see above). € and \ do not require Unicode encoding, they just require 2 characters each out of a 160 character message.

However, î or ô do require Unicode encoding in order to be sent out. Your example shows that your provider is converting "î and ô" to "i and o". So that is how they allow it to fit in 160 characters without using Unicode.

So if you want to do the same, you would have to do your own conversion to strip the accents, as we do not have a setting to do this.

Here's a link that explains what characters are in the GSM character set for 160 character messages:
