Hi,

Generally speaking, you are best installing NowSMS on a PC other than your mail server.

In order to accept SMTP e-mail, a mail server needs to listen on port 25.

If you have multiple IP addresses on a PC, it is possible to have one SMTP mail server per IP address. But this requires that the SMTP mail server have a configuration setting that tells it to only listen to a single IP address (in NowSMS, you do this by selecting an "IP Address" on the "MMSC" page of the configuration dialog). This setting procedure varies based on mail server. But in general, my recommendation is that it is less hassle to install the two servers on separate PCs.

With all of this said ... if you only want to have your local users be able to send SMS through NowSMS using their e-mail client, then it is possible to configure NowSMS to listen on a non-standard SMTP port ... as long as the e-mail client that you are using supports this (Outlook Express does).

Using this approach requires that you configure each e-mail client to connect directly to the NowSMS server. (Which you do not need to do if instead you setup NowSMS as a separate mail server.)

On the "MMSC" page of the NowSMS configuration, specify the SMTP port number as an available port number, such as 2525.

Then, in the e-mail client, configure an extra e-mail account. Point the inbox for the account to a dummy POP3 or IMAP4 mailbox on your standard mail server. Configure the outbound settings on the account to connect to NowSMS on the non-standard SMTP port.

If you want to track activity by user, then create accounts on NowSMS under the "SMS Users" page of the configuration dialog. Then configure SMTP AUTHentication in the mail client to login to the SMTP server with a configured username and password.

To send an SMS via e-mail, the user needs to send a message using the appropriately configured account in their e-mail client, and send to phonenumber@(domain name configured as "Domain Name for SMS E-Mail" on the "MMSC" page of the NowSMS configuration dialog).

I hope this helps. Configuring e-mail servers can be a tricky business.
