I was thinking about using an EDGE network for sending SMS messages. Does NowSMS allow me to do this at the current time, or do I need to wait for an update? Also, how many messages a second should Iexpect to send w/ and EDGE modem? | |||

Hi Richard, When you select the "GPRS" setting in NowSMS, basically that means that you are signaling the modem to use packet switched networking (data) for SMS, instead of circuit switched (voice channel). So if the modem supports EDGE, and EDGE was available from the mobile operator, it would try to use EDGE. (Otherwise it would fall back to GPRS.) For a 3G modem, it's the same thing, just that acronyms don't come into play so much, but again, it's signalling the modem to use the packet data channel for SMS instead of circuit switched. I haven't had sufficient experience with SMS over EDGE to offer any performance guidelines. However, based upon limited tests, I would not expect major speed increases beyond SMS over GPRS speeds. The reason is because latency becomes much more of an issue. When you send SMS, you're sending smaller packets of data and waiting for acknowledgements before you can send the next message. On the other hand, when you talk about using a modem for sending MMS, going through an operator MMSC, EDGE can be substantially faster than GPRS. -bn | |||
