Hi,

I am doing research on cell broadcast these days to improve my knowledge skills. I have some questions in mind, I will be obliged if you can help me in this regard.

Q1. What changes are required in the operators’s network to enable a cell broadcast service?
Q2. How secure this service is from Spamming?
Q3. Can we get cell id from cell phone?
Q4. What is the syntax to send a broadcast message?

Regards,
Aftab

Hi Aftab,

The ability to use this channel is completely under the control of the mobile operator.

Q1. Typically, the mobile operator needs to install a Cell Broadcast Centre (CBC) which acts as the controller for sending out cell broadcast messages.

Q2. Well, if an operator sets up a CBC, they'll definitely make sure to install it in a way that it could not be abused. There is no interface to send out a cell broadcast without going through the CBC.

Q3. I don't understand this question in the context. Cell broadcast is used to send out a broadcast message to subscribers within a cell area, who have the service enabled.

One of the challenges of cell broadcast is how you enable and manage the service on user's cell phones, as cell broadcast preferences are configured in different ways on different phones. (However, the settings are stored on the SIM, and can be managed through OTA SIM updates.)

Q4. That depends on the CBC.

I've never seen an actual system using cell broadcast in use. I can tell you that extensions have been defined to SMPP for interfacing with CBC's. I would assume that either SMPP or vendor specific APIs would be used.

Here's probably a good place to get some more info:
