I've several questions on which I'd appreciate advice; What is the maximum rate at which NOWSMS can receive SMSs and post them to my server? Will most GSM phones/modems support this rate or are there any that are outstanding? Is it possible/permissible to run multiple instances of NOWSMS on the one licence? (As this would scale up the reception rate.) I only want to use NOWSMS for message reception, if that makes any difference to your advice. Thanks in advance, Rob. | |||

Hi Rob, Generally speaking, phones/modems can receive SMS messages at about the same rate as they can send them. This ranges from 6 to 10 MPM in standard GSM setups, to 30 to 60 MPM when SMS over GPRS is supported. Basically, when you configure NowSMS, there is an "SMS Access" setting for the modem, and you should set this to "GPRS", then see if your modem can properly send messages to determine whether or not a particular operator supports it. You can have multiple modems attached to a single server. It basically becomes an issue of how many modems you can get Windows to recognise. Do note that from my personal experience, I've found multiport serial cards and serial connection modems to be more reliable than USB. So I would encourage you to go the serial route in a multiple modem configuration (although USB is less expensive). NowSMS routes received messages to 2-way commands at the same rate as its overall license. It will receive as fast as it possibly can from the modem or SMSC, in order to avoid backlogs at your mobile operator or service provider.
