What is the advantage of sms over GPRS?

In the new patch 3 for now5 I notice the above feature can I know what is the advantage? Does it mean we need to pay both the sms charge plus the gprs connection fee or just one? Pls advise. thanks.

The advantage is speed ... if your operator supports it.

The maximum potential speed over a GSM/GPRS modem goes from 6 to 10 messages per minute to 30 to 45 messages using SMS over GPRS.

When using a phone as a modem, you could normally select this setting through a menu option in the phone. We added this setting to the menu to provide a way for setting this value with actual GSM modems.

Generally speaking, I haven't seen where SMS over GPRS gets charged as data traffic, as I don't believe SMS over GPRS actually involves getting assigned an IP connection ... I believe it occurs over lower level GPRS protocols.

So generally speaking, where supported, the charge has seemed to be the same (except for one case where an operator enabled SMS over GPRS but wasn't actively billing for it during the first few months).

Hi, interesting discussions, what carrier was this? If I remember correctly it was in Spain about a year or two ago when they launched GPRS for the 1st time :-)
