I tried your SMS/MMS gateway program. But I need some FREE sms service hosts as it says on the settings dialog when I start the program for the first time. Can you tell me if there are any FREE SMS Service Hosts which can send to networks in Delhi, India?

Hi Vidur,

That would certainly make for a fantastic world if such a service existed. Perhaps they could also offer free unlimited phone calls from your mobile as well without a subscription to a mobile operator.

Sorry, I don't mean to be sarcastic ... let me explain.

At the end of the day, when an SMS message is delivered to a mobile phone, somebody pays for it.

However, because there are so many web sites that talk about "Free SMS", it is natural to expect that you could find a way to send as many SMS as you want without paying for them.

But there's always a catch.

Let's talk first about web sites that allow you to send "Free SMS".

Their usual catch is that they require that you login to their web page in order to access a form that allows you to send SMS. They don't provide any programmatic interface for sending SMS (such as NowSMS might use), because they are subsidising their costs of sending SMS by selling advertising on their web pages. In order to send SMS, you need to login to their web site, and view the ads. The advertising revenue is intended to cover the cost of SMS messages that are sent. If it was possible to send SMS without viewing the advertisements, then the service could only lose money.

Then there are other types of sites that are "communities". These sites provide you with some free services, but this is in exchange for allowing the service to send advertising messages to you. These services are geared more toward mobile users, and might also have some limited support for sending SMS messages from a web form.

Then there is the fact that in the USA, you can send an SMS message to almost any mobile phone by addressing the message to phonenumber@insert-domain-for-the-appropriate-mobile-operator. But the USA model for SMS is different from most of the rest of the world. In most of the world, the sender pays for SMS. In the USA, the sender and receiver pays. With the e-mail interface, a special exception is made that only the receiver pays. (And spam is a big problem here, obviously the providers are very cautious about spam.) The e-mail interface in the USA seems to be about the only place where an SMS sender can get a completely free ride for sending out SMS messages programmatically.

So I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you're probably not going to find what you are looking for.

If your needs are simple, you might find an advertiser supported web site that provides "Free SMS" services, and allows you to login and send messages in exchange for viewing ads. But you are not likely to find a free service that allows you to send SMS messages programmatically (except possibly an e-mail interface like exists in the US if you live in an area where receiver also pays for SMS).

I'm not sure if the above is an attempt at free advertising, or an actual user post.

But, I did visit the web sites as I'm always looking for good services.

mysmsaddress has a reasonable pricing schedule and coverage list, but I have no experience with it, so I cannot comment on reliability.

For smscountry, the price may be quite good, but the network coverage seems pretty poor. Perhaps it is just a problem with the web site, but only one area code supported on one carrier in the US, similar limited coverage in France, Germany and Spain. Also no Vodafone or T-Mobile support in the UK. So either the coverage list is wrong, or the low price limits to where you can send. It may be a good deal if your target users are in one of the countries where this service has solid network coverage.

Perhaps some day someone will explain why they think replying to a posting on this discussion board will cause an SMS message to be generated ...
