Hi,

From what I understand, the ".nlm" format is specific to the Logo Manager software, which allows you to transmit these types of screen savers over a data cable to your phone.

I found a site that has quite a few free ".nlm" files (http://fp.marknatalie.f9.co.uk/ff/3310screensavers/), and studied the format of those files.

Basically, they are animated OTA Bitmaps, as defined by the Nokia Smart Messaging specification. Very few of the Nokia phones support these (in fact, I don't own any of the Nokia phones that support these, so I can't do much experimentation myself).

You're fairly limited over what you can send via SMS, which is why these screen savers are usually transferred over a data cable with software like Logo Manager.

If you look at the NLM files from the site that I referenced above, you'll see that most of the files are 2K in size.

Figure that when sending over SMS, you can only get about 128 bytes of data per message (that's a rough estimate). So a 2K image would require 16 SMS messages to send ... if the receiving phone could handle it. (Most Nokia phones can handle up to 5.)

How large the image is depends on the size of the image, and how many frames there are in the image.

The images at the above referenced link are 72 width by 28 height. Each frame requires width/8 * height bytes of data, in this case (72/8 * 28 =) 252 bytes per frame (plus a few bytes of header).

So if you're going to transmit over SMS, I wouldn't go beyond 2 frames at that size. Even so, such an image is going to require 4 or 5 SMS to send (the extra bytes for the header is going to push it to 5 SMS).

Unfortunately, I can't really help you much in constructing the messages.

I can tell you that from what I see, the first 6 bytes of an NLM file are header information that appears to be specific to that file format. The data that follows is the animated OTA bitmap.

And from what I understand, you then send that OTA bitmap as part of a downloadable profile message (same UDH/port # as a Nokia picture message). You'd have to refer to the Nokia Smart Messaging Specification for the format.

NowSMS doesn't really have any tools to simplify this process. So my apologies if this information is too technical in nature.
