Bryce,

As you may remember, I have a phone camped on ATT 2G network tied to my nowsms server. I am attempting to add a 2nd phone (camped on Tmobile 2G network) to the nowsms server. This has proven very problematic.

The nowsms server seems to lose connection with the phone once a day at least. Can you offer any advice on how I may resolve this?

Bruce, this issue has been outstanding for a long time. I'd appreciate your help in resolving it as we really need to add tmobile to my nowsms server for sending class0 sms ... else I'd like to ask that nowsms.com provide me another serial number at no cost to workaround this promised feature that did not work for me.

Without more detail, it's hard to offer any suggestions.

There is not any fundamental problem with attaching more than one modem to a single server.

In fact, you'll find quite a few people running with more than two modems.

But, if you're using a phone as a modem ... and particularly if you're using 2 of the same model phones as a modem ... then you may be encountering a problem with the software modem drivers for those phones ... particularly if they are USB. Basically, the phone manufacturer may not have taken into consideration that more than one of the same device could be simultaneously connected to a computer, and they didn't test for it.

Anyway, I'm assuming that the modem goes off-line and NowSMS reports: "Modem Failure -- Unable to access modem, ensure that it is powered on and passes diagnostic tests."

If this happens, the first thing I would do is stop the NowSMS services, then go into Phone & Modem options in the Windows Control Panel. Find the Diagnostics section and run a "Query Modem" test against both of your modems.

If Windows is also reporting a failure connecting to the modem, then there is not much that we can do. Aside from the issue of phone manufacturers not testing drivers for multiple simultanteous phones ... the other thought that comes to mind is to make sure you are not using a USB hub, as that might contribute to a problem.

If Windows doesn't report a problem, then make sure you are running NowSMS 2007.03.09 or later, as that could fix the problem ... but it will only fix the problem if Windows does not report an error when querying the modem. (The issue was that NowSMS used to only scan the modem IDs at startup ... but if the modem driver has a glitch which causes the modem to un-install and then re-install itself, sometimes Windows generates a new modem ID. The newer versions of NowSMS detect this and rescan the modem IDs.)
