Hi,
I am using nowsms with Motorola E365 as GSM modem. I am able to send SMS from my PC using nowsms, however receiving is not working. I
am following the steps mentioned in the help document.
Any idea how should I go about debugging this ?

-cheers,
Ravi

Hi Ravi,

The inbuilt GSM modem capabilities in some phones do not support receiving. So far, we have only observed this as being an issue with Nokia Series 60 phones (3650/7650/6600), and the Nokia 92x0.

But it could be an issue in other devices as well.

Probably the best way to troubleshoot this is to determine if this is the case.

Go into Hyperterminal (under Programs/Accessories/Communications), and connect to the COM port to which the device is attached.

Hit Enter a couple of times.

Type ATZ and press Enter, and you should get an OK response back.

If the ATZ text did not echo to the screen, type ATE1 and press Enter. This should return an OK, and subsequent requests will echo back to the screen.

From another phone, send an SMS into this phone, and do not take any action on that phone to read this message.

Now issue the following commands, and let me know what response you see.

AT+CSMS=0
AT+CMGF=0
AT+CMGL=0
AT+CPMS?
AT+CPMS=?
AT+CPMS="ME"
AT+CMGL=0
AT+CPMS="SM"
AT+CMGL=0

If there's any hope, we should be able to figure it out from the responses to these commands.

Hi,

I tried the AT commands on the hyperterminal . They all seem to be working fine (respose is "OK") .
does that mean mobile phone is compatible for recieving sms and nowsms can process them.
Any suggestions how we can debug this further.

Cheers
Ravi

Ravi,

Apologies for the delay getting back to you.

The "AT+CMGL=0" command should report back a list of received messages.

So if it just says "OK", that means that the modem understands the command, but unfortunately it is not returning any information about any received messages.

I'd still be curious to see the results to the above to see if they shed any possible clues ... if you could log the results to a file and then post in reply.
