Hello, I'm planning on purchasing a GSM/GPRS/Edge modem. Do you have any product recommendations, which are known to be compatible with your software? I dont' want to get stuck with something I'm unable to use. | |||

Hi, Where are you located? Product availability seems to vary quite a bit by country. In Europe, we tend to like the Falcom Samba modems, which are relatively low cost. In the US, we tend to recommend the Multitech GPRS modem (the EDGE model is ok too, but the GPRS model seems more reliable for SMS ... I'd go the GPRS route if SMS is your primary consideration, EDGE if MMS is a primary consideration). In Asia, we tend to see the iTegno modems more frequently, and they seem to work well. (These also show up in some European countries as well.) This is far from exhaustive, just a quick "off the cuff" list. One note ... generally speaking with any of these modems, after adding the modem, go into "Properties" for the modem in the "SMSC" list of NowSMS, and change "SMS Message Storage" to be "Direct to Modem". That setting tends to work best for receiving messages with dedicated modems. -bn | |||

Thanks for the prompt response Bryce. I'm based out of Canada, so I'm going to go with the Multitech GPRS modem. I noticed that the are a few versions of this model; serial, USB, and ethernet versions. I'm leaning towards the USB model, but just in case are all 3 versions supported? | |||

Hi Jimmy, I was going to let Bryce follow-up, but he's been busy with the new test release... Serial or USB are both OK. Ethernet looks interesting (and you can make it work for SMS only, no MMS), but the Ethernet model wasn't really designed for this type of application. It is more designed to allow other Ethernet devices to share a GPRS data connection. Since you're in Canada, I should mention that for some reason we tend to have problems with MMS over GPRS modems in Canada on Rogers. Some people don't seem to have any problems, others are able to receive one MMS message initially, and then can't receive any more. We haven't had much luck figuring it out, but in a few of these cases, people have swapped SIM cards and everything was then ok. We think it has to do with the operator MMSC used by Rogers ... it is not used by many other operators, and we think there are some strange issues with it. We haven't seen any problems with SMS over modems in Canada, just this occasional strange receiving problem for MMS. -- Des NowSMS Support | |||

Thanks for the information Des. Do you know if there any known issues for Rogers while sending SMS over GPRS? I'm not locked to a specific carrier, so it if helps, I can switch to a CDMA/HSPA carrier. | |||

NowSMS works best with networks of the GSM family (GSM/GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA/UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA/etc). The CDMA family (CDMA2000/1XRTT/EVDO/EVDV) doesn't have any formal standards for SMS interfacing with modems. In fact, the Multitech CDMA modems are the only CDMA modems that I'm aware of that work with NowSMS. There is more selection and flexibility in the GSM environments. So I'd go that route. SMS will be fine. I just want to caution you that there are some strange issues with MMS on Rogers that we don't completely understand at this point. (MMS isn't really an option for modems on CDMA carriers, because the Multitech modems only support text SMS in CDMA environments ... and MMS requires binary SMS interfacing.) -- Des NowSMS Support | |||
