If you have to use a phone (better to use a dedicated GSM modem device), then SonyEricsson seems to be the most consistent manufacturer to include solid GSM modem support. Just stay away from the P series (Symbian/UIQ) and X series (Windows Mobile).

These phones are pretty popular in our offices because they have good modem support (bluetooth or USB). Some of the more recent models that I've tested with include the K850 and Z780 (the latter has a slight variant model in the US sold on T-Mobile as the TM506 ... that model just adds support for T-Mobile's 3G network on the 1700 band ... I know that this doesn't apply to you because you're in Jamaica, but I mention this for others as we seem to be getting a lot of questions about the USA. Alternatively, a similar model, the Z750 is available on AT&T in the US.)

Hi,
I have Samsung U700 GSM. Can it work great with NowSMS?
I tried to use U700 but it doesn't work. My Computer read it as SAMSUNG CDMA MODEM..

I want to buy LG KG 200 to alternate if U700 doesn't work. can LG KG 200 work with NOWSMS?

Regarding Samsung phones, I know that there are some Samsung GSM and 3G (WCDMA/UMTS) phones that support GSM modem capability and can be used with NowSMS.

However, I am not aware of any CDMA (or CDMA2000/EVDO) phones which have this capability.

For CDMA networks, the only modem that I have ever seen which can be supported by NowSMS is the Multitech CDMA modem.

The LG KG 200 that you mention does seem to be a GSM device ... it might work with NowSMS, however I can't say that we've had any real feedback regarding the use of LG phones as a modem.

As I mentioned, as far as GSM phones acting as modems, SonyEricsson models tend to be the best performing (send and receive SMS, send MMS). Nokia phones can send SMS or MMS but can't receive either. Motorola can send and receive SMS, and send MMS, but they can't send any binary SMS message types ... text messages only.

Regarding the SonyEricsson MD300 USB modem, I haven't had any feedback regarding this device.

However, I've checked the specifications and technical manuals, and it appears that it would have all of the necessary AT command support required by NowSMS.

Hi Satish,

Unfortunately Nokia S60 (Series 60 / Symbian based) phones do not support receiving SMS messages over the GSM modem interface. (Older non-Series 60 Nokia phones did support both sending and receiving, but pretty much every Nokia phone released since 2Q2005 only supports sendin messages via the GSM modem interface.)
