Hello, We are using now sms 2008 to send sms over smpp to our aggregator. Our applications submit messages over http, which in turn passed along by now sms over smpp 3.4. Recently we have noticed MT messages taking over 20 minutes to deliver to user handsets. During this delay, the queue shown on the interface was under 300 messages which stayed this way for 20 minutes. After investigating we have noticed gaps in Now Sms OUT logs. It looks like while now sms received messages through HTTP, send HTTP 200 response right away and kept messages in the memory without putting them into the file queue. After about 20 minutes of silence, now sms starts sending flood of messages, more then licensed 5 messages a second. No messages are lost, but they are delayed and sitting in memory. This seems to happen during high loads. I have ran Windows performance logs and noticed that during this freeze up, memory ocupied goes up while Hard Disk I/O goes down. MO messages + delivery receipts are not affected. Problem occurs every day, 2 - 3 times during a period of 4 - 5 hours of high load, 5 messages a second+. During high load queue goes up to 1600 messages and goes down to under 200, then goes up again up to 1600 messages, then goes down. During a freeze, queue does not go up. Our now sms version is licensed to 5 messages per second. Our aggregator confirmed that there are periods of time, when no messages are received from us. Every day I see similar gaps in the logs. Logs for last 2 days plus smsgw.ini are attached in the zipped file.

What version of NowSMS are you running? Can I see SMSIN-yyyymmdd.LOG files that also cover that same time period? (E-mail them to nowsms@nowsms.com, put Attention: Bryce in the subject line of the message to get the logs routed to me.) I'm not sure what could cause this. The reason that so many messages got posted in the same second is because SMPP async mode is enabled. NowSMS may delay when it submits the message for licensing reasons (i.e., 5 messages per second) ... but it doesn't record the log entry for the message having been submitted until it gets the acknowledgment back from the SMSC. So there is either some sort of delay in these acknowledgments ... or some sort of delay in NowSMS processing these acknowledgments. I find it very suspicious that despite this long period of elapsed time, NowSMS has not flagged any messages with a retry timeout. This makes me believe that the SMSC is not delaying the acknowledgment, but instead for some reason, NowSMS is blocking when processing the acknowledgment. I don't know of any reason why this would happen, however ... certainly nothing looks unusual in your configuration. Please send an e-mail ASAP to nowsms@nowsms.com with the SMSIN-yyyymmdd.LOG files, and the NowSMS version information. Logs were sent to you. Our aggregator receives messages at the same time they are logged in the OUT log. It looks like messages that are delayed are not in the queue. We are firing 5 messages a second which would make a queue size 6000 messages in 20 minutes. Queue size rarely goes over 1700 messages, and during delay queue size was under 300 messages. Where messages are stored is uknown. There are no timeouts. | ||||

I assume that you are submitting to NowSMS via HTTP. Does your application wait for a valid HTTP response from NowSMS, or does it just assume everything is ok? The reason I ask is because when NowSMS generates its HTTP response, by this time, the message has been added to the queue. The HTTP response is not sent until the message has been written to the queue. If memory is going up, it certainly sounds like the messages are stuck in memory somewhere. I'd suggest that you go ahead and enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG. It does slow down performance, but it can keep up with 5mps without any problem. The debug log will roll over to a new file when it reaches 512MB. (At that time, or when the day changes, SMSDEBUG.LOG is renamed SMSDEBUG.BAK and the previous SMSDEBUG.BAK is deleted.) It would be good to catch SMPPDEBUG.LOG and SMSDEBUG.LOG files covering a period of time during which this problem occurs. Then we can get a more complete picture of what is happening. Unfortunately, these logs will be too large for e-mail to handle, but I can setup an FTP site for you to upload them to. So, please go ahead and enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG (will require a service restart). And then let's try to catch the SMSDEBUG.LOG and SMPPDEBUG.LOG covering a period of time when this happens. Version is v2008.02.22 I will turn on debug log tomorrow morning. Yes, we are waiting for 200 OK response. In fact, all the responses are sent back right away during the freeze. Client application is inserting in the database if response received was 200 OK. Messages are getting stuck somewhere between HTTP 200 OK and Receiving smpp response from aggregator. Please email me FTP/other information, so I could upload the DEBUG file tomorrow. | ||||
