Dear Bryce,

I have been testing nowSM5 for a few days. these are my problems, I hope you can response when your are free.

1. NowSMS stops processing incoming SMS from the GSM Modem. It happens after a few days. I need to restart the modem and the nowsms service. i have tried with two modems Nokia GSM/GPRS and WaveCom, both of them behave exactly the same.

2. some of the sms that has .SAR extension is not processed, I noticed that all the SAR files contain Binary SMS. Can't now sms received (process/redirect) binary SMS?

3. If I send sms that is longer than 160 char it stays in the SMS-IN folder and didn't get processed.

Thank you

Hi Eliza,

1. We did have a problem in an earlier release (pre-v4.20), where if you had an HTTP command configured to process received SMS messages, and that command returned an error or a redirect response, a memory leak would occur. This leak could eventually cause the gateway to stop processing received messages.

I have not seen any instances of such a problem in later releases.

If this happens again, I would ask if restarting only one or the other (the modem or the service) is enough to wake things up.

I'd also suggest running NowSMS in debug mode (edit SMSGW.INI, and add Debug=Yes under the [SMSGW] section header). That way, we can look at the SMSDEBUG.LOG for clues. If the gateway does stop receiving messages, but messages can still be sent, I would be very interested in seeing such an SMSDEBUG.LOG. (E-mail to nowsms@now.co.uk.)

2. If the .SAR file is in the SMS-IN directory, this indicates that NowSMS has received a part of a multipart message. However, it has not received the entire message. When NowSMS receives a part of a multipart message, it stores it in the SMS-IN directory, gives it a .SAR file extension, and waits to process the message until remaining parts are received.

I'd be curious to see the files that you are receiving. How are they being generated? One thing that can cause a problem is if a multipart SMS message has different parts sent out from different senders (a problem that NowSMS has had when sending which was just recently fixed).

How about sending me a ZIP of your .SAR files, so that I can look for a pattern. It might also help to see an SMSDEBUG.LOG showing when these messages are received.

3. This is most likely related to the above. For some reason it appears that there is a problem reassembling long messages.

Hi Joseph,

You are correct. There does appear to be a bug in this area.

In my tests, messages were truncated at approximately 1000 characters when processed by the 2-way facility.

We've implemented a fix for this bug in the upcoming v5.10 release.

If you have an urgent need for this fix, I can send you a beta release that includes this fix. Just e-mail nowsms@now.co.uk, and reference this problem.
