After changing to Windows SBS 2008 x64 our SE Z800i doesn't work anymore (no drivers) - We need to find a new phone instead, but the last list of supported phones I can find is a couple of years old - is it possible to post a new?

Hi Michael,

I'd strongly recommend a dedicated GSM modem device over a mobile phone. (Devices like those from Multitech, Wavecom, Falcom, iTegno ... or we're even starting to see a lot of USB sticks from Option and Huawei which work. The problem with the Option and Huawei devices is that many of them are OEM devices offered through mobile operators with different model numbers in different countries.)

Anyway ... on the phone vs. modem issue, the problem is that as mobile phones become more complicated, GSM modem support is one of the features that is getting scant attention from the manufacturers. Data support for tethering is seeing support, but SMS support is less so.

Smart phones like Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, and iPhone do not have SMS support in any GSM modem implementation.

Nokia supports sending only, no support for receiving.

Motorola has a nasty bug in their GSM modem implementation that has persisted for several years across different devices where they cannot support any SMS messages that contain user data header (long text messages, EMS, WAP push, etc.).

SonyEricsson is the most consistent at having good GSM modem support. (Except in their UIQ phones ... the "P" series ... and the "X" series that uses Windows Mobile.)

I have to admit though ... I'm a little surprised that your Z800 doesn't work on Windows x64. I've got a Z780 and I had to install SonyEricsson PC Suite in order to get it to work on Vista x64. I couldn't just install some simple modem drivers.

I checked the SonyEricsson web site, and the Z800 and V800 support download pages only have older versions of PC Suite that don't mention Windows x64.

Whereas the Z780 support download page has a newer version of PC Suite that does mention x64.

What I don't know is whether or not the newer versions of PC Suite continue to support older phones. It's worth a try. If the old phone worked great for you, it would be less hassle to get it working again if its possible.

The links are country specific, here's where I downloaded the latest PC Suite from:
